For Metal Mavens: Gold Plated Coins?

I posted this in the wrong place earlier .

Someone sent an 1899 $10 lib mounted in a pendant. Tested the pendant and its not gold. Only way to see about the coin is to rip the mounting off. First I obtained permission to do so. The coin weighs the same as an authentic eagle. But it's been plated. Does anyone have any idea or know how to remove the plating?

It's sitting on a desk right now in a shallow acid bath.

Jeez the things I get into sometimes, help!image

Gold plated gold, sounds rediculous, you would think that the maker would want the contrast between the two, or would have just polished the coin. Seems like it would be very difficult to remove a coating of gold from gold itself--------BigE

Are you sure it isn't just highly polished which makes it look like it's been plated? Very common with jewelry gold coins.

Not polished. Light yellow to match the mounting it was in. Several shots of acid now seem to have removed some of it. Took the tip of my finger off too which pisses me off. Never saw one like it.

Interesting. How authentic does it look? Post pics?

If the acid desolves the plating,,,,,,it also desolves the coin. Careful with nitric or muriatic

It's not doing a thing to the coin Streeter but it "seems" to be desolving a little of whatever the heck it is on the surfaces. I should have taken an image of the coin beforehand but I never expected this to turn into a marathon.

What doesn't add up is the coin being mounted in a b/s mounting. I'm willing to spend the money and see if they'll net grade it but will they even net grade a coin that's been plated and then an attempt made at removing the plate?

I'm home now and have the thing sittiing on a work bench in the garage with Easy Off sprayed over it . image
