For Metal Mavens: Gold Plated Coins?

I posted this in the wrong place earlier .
Someone sent an 1899 $10 lib mounted in a pendant. Tested the pendant and its not gold. Only way to see about the coin is to rip the mounting off. First I obtained permission to do so. The coin weighs the same as an authentic eagle. But it's been plated. Does anyone have any idea or know how to remove the plating?
It's sitting on a desk right now in a shallow acid bath.
Jeez the things I get into sometimes, help!

What doesn't add up is the coin being mounted in a b/s mounting. I'm willing to spend the money and see if they'll net grade it but will they even net grade a coin that's been plated and then an attempt made at removing the plate?
I'm home now and have the thing sittiing on a work bench in the garage with Easy Off sprayed over it .
