Not happy about the PCGS price guide
I just renewed my account with PCGS so i can submit coins again. One of the big selling points for me spending the $200 bucks on this has always been full use of the price quide. I just noticed I still have only limmited access to this service. I guess i owe Coin Facts a big thanks.

I wouldn't agree that it is better. I used to subscribe to Numismedia, before they eliminated the monthly printed edition. Today it is free online and NGC uses it for its FMV.
The PCGS price guide is more accurate for PCGS-graded coins I collect. I'm sure each has it's strength and weakness in certain series.

Don,
Does PCGS include ebay closing prices in their updates? Seems like a whole lot PCGS graded coins that are sold on ebay are sold below the PCGS price guide. To those that say ebay auctions shouldn't count, I strongly disagree. It is quite possible that prices realized on ebay help set the standard for what buyers pay elsewhere. Probably more PCGS graded coins sold on ebay than any other single source. If that's the case, maybe ebay prices realized should carry a lot of weight in the price guide. After a lot of use of the PCGS price guide I have found I get a more realistic picture of what buyers are currently paying by researching completed sales on ebay.

I agree, Ebay is a major venue for PCGS coin trading and it should be taken into consideration when adjusting the price guide. I have never seen a PCGS representative speak one way or the other about Ebay, and I have a feeling that our host has plans for a new venue to compete with Ebay. I am hoping so because (a) I do not like Ebay as a seller, and (b) Mr. Hall will owe me $1000 because I think this will be "The Big One" announced on the 25th at the Fort Worth ANA.

A couple errors in your reasoning above:
1. The price guide has always been free to everyone. It has nothing to do with the $200 you spent on discounted pre-paid submissions.
2. For many years, the price guide was limited to the "most popular grades" (or whatever). There was a short window of time in which all grades were included, for free, and that window has closed again.
To quote CCU:
"Everyone has the right to complain about the manner in which free stuff is supplied to them. "
Say 2 equal coins, both PCGS graded. One seller has 10,000+ feedback, the other has 5. The 10,000 feedback seller gets $1,000, the 5 feedback seller get $850...happens all the time.
What is the coin worth???
Bottom line, the market is much more complex than just E-Bay. All sales venues are not created equally, nor are all coins.
Price Guides are just that....guides

<< <i>While E-Bay sells a lot of coins, I think there is a discount applied (even though it's unintentional) because of a higher risk of the transaction going sour. All sales are not equal.

The story behind the seller is irrelevant. The Price Guide is an average of what buyers are paying. Doesn't matter who they buy from and why. Price is all that matters when publishing a guide. I can understand not averaging in the oddball sales such as the thief on the corner selling at whatever he can get. The point made in this thread is that ebay is a MAJOR legitimate venue for PCGS graded coins. Therefore prices realized on ebay should be factored in. If they are currently being factored in something is obviously wrong with the final published guide numbers.

<< <i>Seriously, we are very open to adjusting prices to reflect the market. We spend many hours every week doing just that. If anyone sees an area where we are off, let us know. >>
