What's this British copper?

Found this in a box of miscellaneous 2x2's with just a note on it saying "cool color". Must be from my early days when I bought coins just to photograph them image

So, is this a penny? Anything interesting about it?

It's a halfpenny produced at Boulton & Watt's Soho mint. Peck reference is gong to be P1248, 1249 or 1250 which have 5 incuse gunports, 6 raised or 9 raised gunports on the hull of the ship respectively. There is also a variety with 7 raised ports which wasn't recorded by Peck. It isn't either the plain hull or raised line on hull varieties as you can clearly see gunports, though you need to get a glass on them to count the number in order to define the reference.
  • Hi

1799 Half Penny, made at the SOHO mint in Birmingham. $100 +/- depensing the type. Need a closer look at the Ship.

I concur. It looks to be a solid 63/64BN candidate. NEN currently has two examples with the same reverse die crack (one even has the same clash mark by Brit's knee).

    Thank you, everyone!

I just realized that i need a better loupe. For the life of me can't tell how many gunports.

Going to try to take some high magnification photos.

Nice 1/2D, Roman. Cool color, and I had no idea there were incuse gunports or raised, so I learned something new, and that's cool too. image

I never could see the damn gunports well enough on that ship.

"SOHO" is really nice and clear on your example, though.

    Found my Zeiss 16x last night - it's 5 incuse portholes. I guess it's P1248. Thanks, everyone.
