PREFERENCE . . . 1953 TOPPS/1955 TOPPS BASEBALL IN PSA-7; WHY?

Budget aside, which is more eye appealing, desirable and the better to the avid collector in PSA-7 format?

  • I prefer '53s over '55s but keep in mind they are paintings as opposed to photos. Also the bottom borders and chipping make 7s tougher in 53 than the white bordered 55s IMO.

I can't argue with that but the competition for the 1953's in auctions is bizarre, makes the 1955 set look like peanuts to collect.
  • '53's are highly sought after, so there is more "bidding" on them... I prefer the '53 due to the paintings images...I am doing the set in 5/6 I am about 20% done..

53's for me as well. I'm even partial to 56 over 55.

That's the thing Ron, I'm half way through and now realize I am way over my head, it's bumming me out in a big way.

Well, there's good news and bad news with that. The good news is it's a small set (so is 55); the bad news is the big cards will really cost you.

That said, long term if I could only have one set between the 2, I'd choose the '53 set every time even if it took me longer to complete. I think it is the hardest Topps regular issue set to complete in 7 or higher, and that includes the '52, '62, and '71 sets.

  • I had about 60 cards from the 53 set ranging from PSA 3 - 6. My Mantle and SATCHELL PAIGE were both PSA 4's. I gave up on the set because of the WILLIE MAYS price. I wish I would of never got rid of those cards. I should of just taken a break from the set for a year or so. image

Thanks for the insight, maybe I'll hold on and be patient which is something I don't have much of. I am 150 cards in and started the set about 1 year ago and don't have any of the top 5 or so cards yet. It's these crazy high #'s that are making me have second thoughts. I don't know?????????????????????????????????????????

Maybe also think about dropping your grade and add some 5's or 6's. Still great looking cards... heck 1953 was only a few years ago. I think if you drop the set you will be kicking yourself in a couple years.
