Most difficult semi-modern minor league cards

Opinion: Rank the order of most difficult semi modern league cards to find:

My opinion:

1. R Henderson 1977
2. Orange Ripken 1980
3. Sandberg 1980
4. Blue Ripken 1980

I always hear that the orange ripken is the hardest, but it seems like a toss-up to me with the 1977 Modesto R henderson.

    1970's are modern to some....

Id put the 1972 Puerto Rican League Schmidt and Gossage, and the 1973 Venezuelan League Rice near the top, if not the top.

Here is a link to the scans if interested

Check out the Gossage, He should have stayed away from the hairdryer back then! Wow.

    1972 PRL Gossage
    1972 PRL Schmidt
    1973 VL Rice

If you think finding minor league cards of star players is hard--try finding them for obscure/minor players. Here are some 1970's minor league cards on my watch list.

1974 Syracuse Chiefs Team Issue #3-Tom Buskey

1975 Appleton Foxes TCMA #19-John Narron
    1975 Oakland Oaks 20th Anniversary #9-Hal Brown
1975 Omaha Royals Team Issue #3-Hal Baird
1975 Phoenix Giants Caruso #17-Tommy Toms
1975 West Palm Beach Expos Sussman #14-Ron Staggs

1976 Oklahoma City 89ers Team Issue #7-Tom Buskey
1976 Oklahoma City 89ers Team Issue #28-Larry Kiser
1976 Omaha Royals Top Trophies #2-Hal Baird
1976 Phoenix Giants Valley National Bank #23-Tommy Toms

1977 Jacksonville Suns TCMA #18-Bill Paschall
1977 Phoenix Giants Coke Premium #23-Tommy Toms
1977 Phoenix Giants Cramer Coke #23-Tommy Toms
1977 Phoenix Giants Valley National Bank #23-Tommy Toms

1978 Springfield Redbirds Wiener King #14-Tommy Toms

1979 Syracuse Chiefs Team Issue #29-Tom Buskey

I'm sure these card are available in someone's stockpiles--but no one advertises them because they are not HOFers like Ripken, Schmidt, Henderson, Jackson, etc. A few I need are actually on eBay right now, but the seller wants around $15 delivered per card. I'll keep waitingimage
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Akbar - Get in touch with Dave Weber. He has an incredible stock of nothing but minor league cards.

He had a card from 1978 of my buddies dad that I purchased, so it's worth a shot.

  • I grew up in Reading PA and still live in the area. Wasn't the 1980 Reading Phillies minor league set a big one? Was Ryne Sandberg in it?

Just found this old thread via a search. Never knew that 1973 Rice existed. Very cool! Half the fun for me in collecting this rarer, unknown stuff is trying to find it. Could you imagine trying to find these things pre-internet?? Here is a newer one that I've been trying to find for years and I just missed it because it was on eBay UK: image There is also a Niklas Lidstrom in this 1989 Swedish Semic Championships set that sold raw on ebay a month ago or so that I didn't win. Both are "first cards" of each future HOF'er.
  • Has anyone ever seen a card from the 1973 Sherbrooke Pirates set? Not even Dave Weber has it.
Collecting Matt Alexander, Manny Sanguillen, and Rennie Stennett - pm me with your oddball items for sale or trade!

Same here. Minor League cards, the different Panini cards. I also like Police team issues. Various food issues like Franz Bread out in the Northwest. It's one of the things in my opinion that makes this hobby great. You have so many choices of how/what to collect.
