Just where the heck are all the nicest Jefferson nickels?

leothelyonleothelyon Posts: 8,484 ✭✭✭✭✭
I haven't seen any for awhile for the exception of the 1942-S and 1944-S that sold a few weeks back. Leo has money burning in his pocket but they are no where to be found. image

Knowing just how hard it is to get some examples, Jefferson collectors have a tendency to hang onto the good ones.

there has been an increase of hardcore Jefferson collectors who are keeping them

my last purchase of a $650 Jefferson brought my war nickel set up from 13th to 12th

I have to save up for my next purchase

I do have some nice ones raw to Teletrade that should be going through in next couple months

I suppose many (most?) of them are already in Registry sets, and as they saying goes "They aren't making any more of 'em."

For the last three years I've been happy if I could upgrade one coin in my non-FS set per year, and the last time I did was in March 2009.
    When in doubt, don't.

I am not sure how many full step collectors realized that Heritage auctioned off in their weekly auctions on 2/21 & 2/23 some really nice full step Jeffersons. I purchased about 12 full steppers dated 1985 - 2002 and after my 1st look at least 7 or 8 will upgrade coins in my set with an average cost of $200.

Maybe 2 of these coins, PCGS graded MS66FS could upgrade to MS67FS.

So rather than paying big $ for 1 coin, I got 7 or 8 upgrades. All of the keepers have flawless steps, strong strikes and some have PL surfaces.

    Good hunting!

I love nice looking silver war nickels and these are great examples. But I have to say the '64 and '57 are amazing nickels.

    Frank,

The 1991-P, 1992-P and 1998-P looked like possible upgrades.

If you don't see what is special about the '64 nickel start trying to find one that nice at a coin show. While a billion were minted and it is "only" 46 years latter, good ones are hard to find.

now it may be 46 year's later there still pretty plentyful in mint state ( I myself have a least 12 roll's ) so unless there something I'm missing in the strike (error, ect. ).
    I stand by my comment.

While not much can be said about the strike of the 1964, band toning on Jefferson nickels are collectable. Anything can be collectable if someone has a desire for it. I have a few coins with this type of toning. But locating a fully struck, brilliant white, high grade 1964 business strike with full steps is a different animal which has alluded me for almost 20 years. But the more common come with a rough look to them.
My last quest for a nice example came through TT. I didn't like it so it was returned. The seller then sent it to NGC and they graded it a MS66 5FS coin. I was offered the coin again but for 20X the money. But we are all quite aware how liberal NGC grades it's coins and I let this seller know this.

not to be critical of anyone but i would echo hammered54's reply, that 1964-D is a shot MS63 with some nice album tone but past that it's nothing special. c'mon, if you look hard enough and long enough you'll find pretty coins. the 1957 is one of them, nice color on a fairly clean and well struck coin for the date.
  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
these coins are really nothing special but i think it's typical of what's out there by the many thousands, and this is just the War Nickel dates. i imagine that many sets are intact in the various folders, chiefly Dansco/Intercept Shield/Whitman and they can be found in virtually every shop and at every show i attend. the problem is a simple one-----the coins are overall very average but if you want the entire set for a few coins you'll need at least $200. then you end up with a few nice coins and a whole lot of stuff you can't sell. Jeffersons were saved quite a bit but it isn't a very glamorous set.

Nice 1944-D Al! The long cheek die crack reminds me of my 2 examples.

It's true about the band toning but we must remember the generation gap we have on these boards.

    Frank,

Someone that grades Jeffersons better than I would need to explain why your 1942-d / Hor D is not an MS66! Beautiful coin and the steps are awesome. If you say there is a small break in the steps, I will believe you. I would love to see it in hand someday.

Leo - I'll go to my grave believing that coin is not in a landfill! I'm still waiting.
