First: SHOW me an UNC 8R coin, Second: Hypothesize how it survived in UNC state!

I'm thinking of reaching forward for an UNC one for my box o 20....but I keep thinking.. how?

Here's a Mexican 1882 Mo MH 8R in NGC MS63. I'm not sure how it survived, but I'm glad it did. image

Here is a link to an article concerning "How do Coins Survive?" which I found informative.

Hey Roman, did I hear my name? Thanks for the shameless plug! image

    You asked, so...

    1788 Bolivia (Potosi) 8R NGC 63
    image

1773 Bolivia (Potosi) 8R ex. Pittman UNC
    image

1800 Bolivia (Potosi) 8R Blazing UNC
    image

1791 Bolivia (Potosi) 8R liner coin (could go either way, but a tough coin struck this well)
    image

Keep in mind that Potosi 8 Reales are extremely tough in UNC. Mexico City UNC's are probably the most plentiful!

My hypothesis; either 1) a discovered hoard, or 2) an insightful collector, or 3) someone who just saw history in their selfless hands and decided to put something away without regards to seeing any future profit for himself or even possibly for his future heirs (since collecting coins probably was not even in the equation).

Edited for spelling. Caught that one pretty late! image

Thanks Frank. I learned decades ago by my numismatic mentors to ALWAYS buy the best I could afford/locate. I still hold that advice dear!

    awesome thread and pics
  • No pic but in my case here in Houston rests a portrait 8R from Potosi, I think 1808 and NGC 63. It survived in a hoard, maybe about 20-30 coins.
  • Man, I love this thread! Hopefully, more to come after my December Argentina/Bolivia trip!

1825 Potosi Bolivia 8 Reales NGC61 (undergraded by at least 1 1/2 points)

Edited to add; not looking to find anything down there, I'll just have time to photograph more of my existing pieces when I return!

I only have a couple of 8R's, and only from Peru. This 1827 is in an NGC 62 holder.
