So Modern Type Will End in 1999?

wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,647 ✭✭✭✭✭
Keith just told me modern type will end in 1999?? What happened to 2000 and 2001, 2002 and beyond?? Did some poll conclude that these coins were not "worthy"? image Wondercoin

  • Mitch,

The 20th Century set will run from 1900-1999. The "Modern Sets" will start either in 1950 or in 1965, depending on feedback received today.

  • Oh yeah, there was a poll. They told us to stuff it on that one. image

Who is the "they" and the "us" in the above sentence? Wondercoin

  • PCGS's qoute on the latest e-mail on the issue of start and stop dates for the 1900 set was:

    7. The 20th Century. The world celebrated the end of the 20th Century on December, 31, 1999...and so does the PCGS Set Registry. Deal with it!

(Note: Cosmic started a poll on this issue as well)

  • That poll had 5 different choices and the has no run away winner. The lead was 1901 to 2000. Well at least with a 1900 to 1999 set I won't loose my 1900 Morgan and 1900 $10 Liberty.

PCGS got that one right. 1900- 1999 makes more sense for a 20th Century type set. Now, when will a 21st Century type set be offered?

  • I lose three prime pieces and still support the decision:

    2001-P Jefferson MS-67FS
    2001-D Kennedy MS-68
    2000-P Virginia MS-68

Pat, see anything you want to make an offer on?

My vote was contingent on them renaming the set if they chose a year
    other than 2000.

The world did not celebrate the end of the 20th century in Dec of 1999!

Keith H.- Yes they did. On Dec. 31 at 11:59, weren't you celebrating?
Keith- Sure! Hook me up with that 01-D Kennedy in MS68!

Ok, they were celebrating but they were not celebrating the end of the
    Millennium (or century).

  • On Dec. 31, 1999 at 11:59, I was not celebrating. I was preparing for realtime testing of all the computer systems that I had designed and written. image Everything went great, no problems. Boy was I good.image

    Mitch,
The 1900-1999 set is ok with me. It also sounds as if we may only end up with (2) 50 SQ (1 Clad and 1 Silver) I was wondering (I'm probably having a early senior moment) In the Circ. Strike sets, how can you have a silver 50 state 25c? I thought they were all proof. Not sure about the sets with gold, even though I have an $5 Indian at PCGS right now. I may shoot for the sets without. Just my two cents.

I was celebrating on Dec. 31, 1999. Then everybody stopped at the stroke of midnight and waited to see if the lights were going to go out. *whew*

PCGS goofed. The first century started with year 1 and ended with year 100, therefore the 20th century actually started with 1901 and ended with 2000. The game show "Jeopardy" had a question concerning this some time ago.

How could Modern Type have ended in 1999? I started my set in 2001! image

Hoo boy... does anybody read Numismatic News? Remember the 2000/2001 debates over when the 20th century ended and the new millenium began, in the editorial section? They must have run for six months. I got so sick of it that I quit reading. Hope this isn't gonna be a replay.

BTW, for the record, I stand with Iclugza. Maybe because of that beautiful Britannia signature pic. I do have a weakness for Brit coins, and might one day dump my Registry sets to go back to them. I always thought some "foreign" sets like gold Sovereign type would be cool, or some Canadian sets, at least, but that is wandering off the topic and into "The Dark Side", LOL.

2001 began the 21st century, IMO. But who cares? I do think it is a goof to end a set in 1999. Maybe they were looking at the numerals on the coins, and the 2 in front of the new dates spooked 'em. image
