Russian Soviet Union coin with blimp/airship

Not many coins depict blimps or airships, but this one does.

It is a Soviet Union coin commemorating the WW2 Defense of Moscow from
the German invaders.

It shows a blimp flying in the background; the blimps were used to interfere
with enemy aircraft.

It actually was a "barrage balloon", they were used over Moscow for most of the duration of the war, and were an idea that came from the balloons being used in London during the blitz. They interfered with low level precise bombing of Heinkel He-111s and the Dornier Do-17s by causing the aircrews to have to avoid them. Curiously the Germans didn't use them, but preferred to use flak guns against bombers, and the flak was actually more effective as a deterrent than the barrage balloons.

Dirigibles were featured on Soviet stamps from the 1920's, no doubt inspired by the Graf Zeppelin which flew around the world in 1929, and across the USSR that year.

Nice! It would be fun to see it displayed with the stamps.

I'm surprised there aren't more coin/stamp displays-I'm sure you could do some amazing stuff...

    Or maybe I'm just unaware.
