Actually found hoards of ATG coins are not uncommon. It's just that this one was found by an official archaeological expedition and so it's in the news. Most hoards are "unofficially" found, often by the poor of whatever country, and go through the dealer pipelines and end up in collector's collections.

I've never seen a hoard from a 2000 plus year old bronze box but to my untrained eye those pieces look cleaned.
