Went to my first coin club meeting tonight...

The Atlantic County Numismatic Society is a great club for anyone interested in the hobby. Good people, good times, and some decent coins for sale and auction. I plan on becoming a member and going back alot.

At the auction, there was some cool stuff, not alot though. Saw the club pres present how to crack a coin out of a slab... With an EastWing hammer on the ground... WOW! He wanted to smash a sample slab from PCGS but I made sure to inform him about those.image Anyway, he smashed the slab alright, then the Proof coin fell on the floor and shards of slab...

It was VERY entertaining.

Me and ambro went and had some good times. He spotted a fake $2.5 Indian in the auction and the club pulled it. Very good eye he has for gold it seems.

A guy had what looked to be a double struck Lincoln from 1999. It was a vice job for sure. There was a debate about it, but the more I think about it, the more I know in my soul it was a man made error. When laid on the rev it had a wobble to it, and the thing just looked off. IIRC ambro got pics of it and maybe he would post them for us all.

Finally, I bought my first coin in afew years tonight. Not in the series Im collecting right now, but for $8, I could find alot of worse ways to blow the cash. Its an 1817 13star Large cent, with a slight rev die rotation. Its a G or so, but like I said, for $8.....image What are ya gunna do.... Im trying to get images, but its no luck. Also, its my first Large cent. Ive owned them before, but never bought one. I think it might stick...image

Anyways, I suggest strongly going to a coin club meeting and have some fun. The more I get involved with coins and everything it includes, the more I see about the hobby I truely love. Things like this will keep me in the hobby for life.image

Thanks again ambro!:image

Sounds awesome. I need to attend a coin club one of these days.

  • I highly recommend it. It was a blast to be i a room with only collectors. Like being at a show, but without the overwhelming feeling ya know.

Anyone got any info on the 1817 13 star LC? I dont have any LC books anymore, nor have even a passing knowledge in the series for the most part, I know key dates and semi key dates. That and the 2 varieties for this year, the 13 star and the 15 star. Which is scarce in relation to the other? Also, is there an album for LC's by dansco or someone?

    Thanks in advance.image

Sounds like you had a great time! I am pretty excited as I just tonight found out about a coin club that is close enough to home that I might actually be able to attend it! I hope my experience is as good as yours was!

$8 for a problem free 1817 large cent? Yeah, I would have been on that too...

  • Thats great man, youll have fun. Just being around fellow collectors is a treat for me being with 3 kids all day and night.image

After getting the coin home and out of the 2x2, Id have to say, not entirely problem free, but for $8, I cant see a thing wrong with it. Its raw, its from 1817, its got all its detail for the most part visible. Theres 2 small 'greenish' issues on the obv, but small enough for me to not care. And theres a small planchet flaw on the obv and a small hit on the rev under the wreath.

Honestly, the more I look at it, the more I love it.

I think Im going to go for a worn down and low grade raw Large cent collection. I could have some serious fun with these things.

Let us know if you go to the meeting and how it was.image

It definitly sounds like something I would buy! With a coin that low graded, I don't mind a ding here or there. Not a big fan of green stuff on the coins but for something that old I don't think I would pass over it because of that!

If I can find out more and am able to get to it, I'll definitly be doing a My First Coin Club Meeting Report image

Sounds like I think like you do with some of these things on coins. The green bothers me because I dont want it spreading, but its so small.... Ive seen way worse on red in slabs...

I bet this would slab thats how non issue it is IMHO.

Man, I cant put it down. image Its the first coin Ive bought in some time, and man have I missed that feeling. I wonder how many of these things I can buy for under $20 or so...

What a fun hobby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and I cant wait to read your report, if it was half as cool as the one I went to, youll have a blast!)

Yeah, My tagline has always been "Another man's trash is MY treasure!" when it comes to this kind of stuff! image Heck, as long as it's not holed and not a counterfit I'll consider it image

Still three weeks before their meeting this month...Don't try to hold your breath LOL

  • LOL, No worries. Now Im hunting beat up Large cents...... Man this hobby is addictive, Ive been on 20+ sites already looking at LC's.

I guess I should go buy some of the books I used to have on LC's......image

Anyone know some of the Large cent dealers to go to for this stuff?
  • Just thought of another very cool aspect of this coin for $8... Its the oldest piece Ive ever owned personally.

    Im hooked!
