  • It's not my area of expertise, but I would guess AU58 based upon the reverse.

I'm looking for a 1952 version of that.
    Raw BU.

While on the subject...Any opinions on the grade of this 50cent Canadian?
I picked this up sight unseen from Apmex last July went they were blowing out all Numismatic Items.
    I paid $12 for it.

To my not well-trained enough eye your 50 cent Canadian looks UNC. And if UNC I'm guessing 63 and above.

A little tough to tell because of that very nice toning... I don't see any wear on the cheekbone or other high spots.

I thought mine would qualify as UNC-hope it does.

I really do not think I can offer a reasonable grade based on the sharp contrast in lighting in the image- it s an attractive image, but just not one that I think I am able to offer an opinion- it looks attractive, but remember that this date comes nice

    that this date comes nice

Ah coinkat, can you extrapolate? Perhaps I might not have jumped on it so quickly if I had known that.

There is an area of strong contrast-I got lazy and didn't re-do the image but the contrast is not hiding anything.

    DoubleEagle, I like your opinion.image

I don't know how TPGs are grading these now, but I sent in two original 1935's a few years ago that I thought were locks at MS65...they came back as 63's. I haven't sent in a Canadian dollar since. Both of the coins have nice lustre and few marks, but they alsohave some streaks in the toning that are not scratches, but maybe the grader took them as such. Here's one of the coins, my photos are not the best...

the portrait is really nice on the dollar!!

not sure what grade you'd get for it, probably ms63-64?

that 50cent has great eye appeal!

Well, at least you sent them in and got them graded-probably more than I'm going to do.
At this point the grade is more for my own edification-certainly have no intention of
selling-but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to send them in to be slabbed. (ach, cough, choke-
I said it. Whew, that wasn't so hard.)

Thanks, Colin. My dealer had it marked MS63 but I've seen him make mistakes in, errr, judgement before.image

    Thanks...

The coin shows so much better in hand. There's a good amount of luster
    under that overall even toning.

Though I'm not new to the concepts of Photography. I'm finding that
coin photography is a whole new ball of wax.

1935 was the first year of the issue and several were saved- the quality is usually very good- the pop reports reflect this-

What I was trying to get at- the contrast in the image has a bright area in the fields in front of the forehead of George V to the top of the crown. While the coin has an MS look, I would rather see it in hand before assigning a numerical grade-

    Understood.

I meant to add and seemingly forgot that the contrast above the forhead is not hiding any meanies...image

The 1935 and 1949 Canadian dollars are found in large numbers in higher grades than other dates.

This is due to the fact that these two dates when delivered from the Mint, came in rolls, not in bags.

US tpg's ms63 because of muted luster.

    Canada's ICCS perhaps an ms64.
