Is this a 1921-D Mercury?

Hi, I found this in some junk silver and can't make out the last digit, I'm hoping its a "1." Also, it appears there is some doubling in "LIBER" and the 9.

I appreciate the help, thanks!

  • How are we supposed to know when the fourth digit is faded away completely?
  • It's a 1920-1925 Mercury for sure. If it's a d, that eliminated 23, so 20,21,24, or 25.

It's weird the date is gone when the rest of the coin has so much meat left on it. Almost looks counterfeit...

BNB, I was hoping that a Merc expert could use other diagnostics to determine the date. For instance this type of doubling was perhaps common on a certain date.
  • Shouldn't the MM placement determine if it's a 21?

Got a picture of the reverse? The doubling is machine doubling and is as common as dirt with mercs. Need to see the reverse.

EDIT to ADD: I believe the 1 that is showing is the wrong style for 1921. Still need to see the reverse and I can tell almost for sure if its a 21 or not.

Its got the reverse that would make it a 21. Now if someone will chime in that knows for sure on the 1 style you will have a complete answer.

Here is a picture I found of a 21D. Notice how the one has a broad base. 1921 is the only year this style of one was used. It looks like your coin is a 24D but could also be a 25D. The reverse you have shown was still common in 24 but got fairly rare in 25 and non-existant in 26 and after.

  • just checked mine and the mintmark is placed in a slightly different position...i'm sure they used multiple dies though so i'm not sure. also, the top end of the final 1 in 1921 on mine is higher than the rest of the digits. i also think there is a bit too much of a curl on the 9 on yours. good luck

  • I see the remnants of a 4.
  • I think it's a 24.

Thank you for your help everyone, especially Ken! I guess that 1921-D spot will remain open in my album image
