Mystery Dime

A friend sent me these two images today:

The colored dime has obviously been plated (perhaps gold), but also interesting is what appears to be some possible doubling of the obverse? (The other dime was simply photographed for comparison purposes).

Does anyone know of any 1984-d varieties that correspond to this? Thanks!

    looks like a plate or something. when i was a plater many years ago my pocket change would turn like that to. i dunno for sure

    Looks double struck, or machine doubled. Hard to tell from the images...
    The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

    Agreed. The obverse is puzzling to me...
