I was browsing Craigslist, and came across this little gem:
$40,000 Morgan Dollars...
I emailed the person and gently explained that the Morgans were not worth anywhere near 40 grand, and wished them luck with the sale.

My father browses Craigslist for fishing gear, hunting, etc. Everytime he runs across anything with Coins he lets me know. He sent me an e-mail yesterday about some Presidential Dollars. I checked out the listing and the guy was selling common bank wrapped rolls of Pres. Dollars for $10 over face value

The mint does the same thing. Every time a new one comes out until there are several million of them then they sell them for face.

That should be a crime. Some old man is going to buy that and get took.

I sure hope nobody is that darned stupid (to actually pay anything close to 40k) but people might be willing to pay far more than their actual worth if they are not familiar with numismatics.

<< <i>Junky, I wouldn't be too quick to make fun of those, some common bank-wrapped rolls of Pres bucks ARE selling for $10 over face. I think there were some sold on the BST. >>
Yeah I believe I remember seeing that thread myself. Eh, I shouldn't have jumped on it too quick - everyone has their own taste in what they collect.
He will go to his grave assured they are $35K or greater...........

And why should this be a crime? The price lists DO say that they are worth around 40 grand in the listed grades. If the seller thinks that they are worth 40 grand and the buyer thinks that they are worth 40 grand then to the only two people in the transaction who matter they are INDEED WORTH 40 grand. The fact that the buyer wouldn't be able to later get his money out of them is irrelevant to this particular transaction.
