Looks to be a catalytic converter, without full pics I might guess a prototype or model used for a patent? I think they had or have some patents for catalytic converters for sue with diesels. It's real hard to tell size from the pictures but at the least I think it's related to cat converters for diesels.

    Hope that helps

It is a "scrubber" designed to remove (chemically, I think) nitrogen oxides from smoke stacks?, fume hoods?. It was designed to reduce NOx emissions so that HNO3 does not form as the result of reaction with water and fall back to earth as acid rain. Not sure what the S/O, P/N, S/N means. Perhaps Sulfur/Oxygen, Phosphorus/Nitrogen/, Sulfur/Nitrogen. Those are my best thoughts.

  • P/N and S/N might stand for "Part number" and "Serial number" as these are typical abreviations on a tag like this. Maybe more information is available from the manufacturer using those numbers.

It could well have some Pt or Pd in it. Those metals (along with Ni) are frequently used as catalysts in chemical reactions. The plate shows that this is catalytic abatement. The chances that there is a significant amount of anthing precious is pretty small, generally catalysts are used in sparing quantities.

It occurs to me that you might contact Englehard to see if that scrubber should be floating around in the public domain.

Good idea I'll try then tomarrow.

  • I think other posters are correct about this being some sort of scrubber and it may well contain platinum family metals as catalyst. I wonder from the shape if there isn't a 'honeycomb' type of matrix covered with that metal inside this beauty. I think it would probably be in the portion that lies sandwiched between the 2 rows of bolts.
Looks like some kind of fabric gasket there is fraying in one place. Could be asbestos so maybe wear your dustmask if you disassemble it.
The case itself and that big flange on the bottom appear to all be stainless steel so surely that has some scrap value as well.
Many, many perfect transactions with other members. Ask please.

With the amount of rust on the bolts and none on the hood, I think it's probably stainless too. Should have some scap value.

image Definitely use a mask and gloves in a well ventilated space, if you handle that gasket material (looks like asbestos) and bag it tightly for hazmat disposal. This looks a job for an air hammer or someone with the forearms of Popeye.

  • Boy oh golly, that looks like it might be platinum ( or other PM) gauze. I was anticipating the ceramic honeycomb but that appears to be a screen. You may have really scored on this puppy!

And after you gut it, you could have a big sheet of tempered plate glass cut into an oval, with holes drilled to match the flange and you could set it up in your living/dining room as a table. How cool, huh? The industrial/techno look is big in Denver where they are retro-fitting old warehouses, grain mills, etc as pricey condos. This thing would look grand in such a decor. You've as good as won the lottery here!
