Who is it going to be tomorrow?
My beloved Sharks have Thornton, Marleau, Heatley and Boyle going for the Canadians
while Joe Pavelski is skating for the Americans. It's gonna be a great game.

The United States or Canada, both are Americans.
edit, Go USA!
I cheer for Team USA tomorrow but if the Canadians lose tomorrow it's in many ways an omen for the Sharks that's been starkly similar for the last few years...that they begin and end the season with the highest expectations then choke when it really counts. Thornton and Marleau have been very quiet in the Olympics so far.

I disagree. Any English speaking nationality that pronounces the letter "z" as "zed" instead of "zee" is definitely unamerican. We won't even mention the part about spelling "centre" instead of "center" and "harbour" instead of "harbor". I've heard of gasoline, but "petrol" is uniquely foreign.
Just for the record, Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and I would definitely encourage people to visit the area sometime in the near future.

Congrats Nash from a season ticket holder of the BlueJackets from day 1!
Miller was out of this world in goal this tourney with almost a .95 save percentage.

Well I have to say, from a life long Sabres fan, that the goal Crosby scored was relatively soft. Miller even admitted in the post game that he was surprised that Crosby lifted his head that soon.
Congrats to the Canadians, they played an absolutely great game..I still can't figure out how they got 7 guys on their blue line for each US rush....AQnd forechecking....the tape of this game is forechecking 101

This was a great event for hockey in North America. So other than in Canada and in the border states that are close to Canada (and other places where the hockey team is the only professional team that doesn't outright suck right now...read: Bay Area) it looks like the NHL will quadruple their average weekly audience to about 20 people per state.
Though the US did win the overall medals count, I couldn't help but notice that most of the medals won were of the inferior quality. Too many silver and bronze medals. It also seemed in most events when the U.S. and Canada went head-to-head (speed skating, ice dancing, curling, etc.) the U.S. ended up on the short end more often than not.
Canada didn't "own the podium" like they vowed to, but they did end up owning the top platform of the podium.

<< <i>Looks like Team USA ultimately laid an egg in overtime. So much for the next "miracle on ice".

I think that the US performance was overall, outstanding, and nothing to be ashamed of. I grew up in the years in which we would pick up a skating medal or two and get destroyed in most events.

The arrogance of that statement amazes me. Typical attitude of most Americans though, I guess.
Edited to add: What "quality" was the last Olympic medal you won?

For the most part the U.S. won medals when and where they were expected to. Other than in the Nordic events there weren't too many surprises. In the speedskating (both short and long track) and snowboarding events the US could have won more medals than they actually did.
Despite the criticisms early during the games, Vancouver and VANOC did a great job overall and made attending the games an endearing experience. It was a pleasure to be part of the Olympics this time as an attending spectator and it was a trip I won't forget anytime soon. Although I can't predict the future with certainty, I don't see myself heading off to Sochi four years from now.
I do plan on attending a few events in London in 2012. Can't wait!

I think he was trying to say that if you win a silver medal, it means that of all the losers, you're the best.

When I attended a medals ceremony in Whistler on 2/19/10, I didn't recall them playing the national anthems of the silver and bronze winners. Actually I still can't thoroughly recall the names of the silver and bronze medal winners. Winning silver and bronze medals is an amazing accomplishment in any regard, but gold is still the "gold" standard.
On a personal level, when I do something I want to be the best, not decent nor pretty good. It's a trait that was passed to me by a parent. Americans as a whole should not think any differently.
"Your effort made you a winner" is a quote exclusively reserved for the domain of parents and coaches who try to fluff up their otherwise mediocre children or team.

I used to have a shirt that said "Second Place is the First Loser". But it was clearly meant as a joke that did not target any specific group, like the US Olympic athletes who came in second or third. Just making the US Olympic team is a major achievement, regardless of whether or not they won a medal.

Okay, then, is it safe to say that your parents would consider you to be a failure as a coin dealer? I mean, you are not even sharing the podium with Heritage. Perhaps you should try another vocation.
<< <i> Besides Wei, I think you are totally missing the spirit of the games. There are no losers or inferior medals. MJ >>
If that were true then the Canadian concept of "own the podium" would never have existed, Lake Placid would just be another village in the Adirondacks, and China, the former USSR and all other former communist-bloc countries would have never spent countless dollars and resources on creating Olympic sports programs to win the most medals.

I sell Heritage a bunch of coins if that counts. You don't know the internal workings of Heritage in detail, and while they have a bunch of traits that are commendable, they do experience their share of tribulations.

Sure, they use you as a punching bag for the boxing drills.
You don't know the internal workings of Heritage in detail, and while they have a bunch of traits that are commendable, they experience their share of calamities that nobody in their right mind would want the pleasure of having to deal with.
The same may be said of the Canadian hockey team.
Look, you represent the US effort in the Winter Olympics as a dismal failure. I just don't see it that way. One can be quite successful (like the WTC Group) without winning the Gold (Heritage).

Have you read my previous posts? In no way did I call the US team a "dismal failure".
As for the Heritage comparison, it's a subject I won't get into deep here but there are plenty of others in this business who have figuratively, won as much gold, as they have.

Perhaps it was implied with statements like,
"Team USA ultimately laid an egg in overtime" and derisive commentary like "So much for the next "miracle on ice"."
and "the U.S. ended up on the short end more often than not."
It all sounded very negative to me. Alas, tomorrow when the Olympics are over, and the thread is poofed, the issue will no longer exist.

Don't you mean gold medals? The balance in your words the others are inferior. MJ

I don't recall how the old Soviet Union or East German programs worked, but the current Chinese program doesn't count silver or bronze medals. In 2008 the news media over there only counted and reported on the 51 gold medals won and not much of a word in relative terms on the other 50 or so medals that they won that weren't gold.
Is it the right thing to do? Hardly, but some countries do set their sights high.
