Doing a little work this afternooon and thought I would toss out this thread.

The coins can be MS or circulated. They can be a complete series [i.e. Ikes] or a partial series [i.e. Memorial cents]

For older Forumites the series could include:

1. Washington Quarters (silver, 1932-1964; and/or clad, 1965-1998);

2. Jefferson Nickels, 1938-present;

3. Roosevelt dimes (silver, 1946-1964; and/or clad, 1965-present);

4. Franklin half dollar (1948-1963;

5. Lincoln Memorial Cents (1959-2008);

6. Lincoln Wheat Cents (1909-1958) [if you are over 60 and were really, really, really lucky];

7. Mercury dimes (1916-1945) [if you are over 60 and were realy, realy, really, really, really lucky];

8. SLQ's (1916-1930) [if you are over 60 and were really,..................... really, lucky];

9. Walkers (1916-1947) [if you are over 60 and were really, .................... really lucky];

10. Buffalo Nickels [if you are over 60 and were really, ......................... really, lucky]; and

11. Peace Dollars (1921-1935) [if you are over 60, live/lived in Nevada, hung out at casinos and were really,..................really lucky].

Plus the more moderns series mentioned below.



For younger forumites the series could include:

1. Lincoln Memorial Cents (you can still find 1959's today);

2. Jefferson Nickels (you may get lucky and find 1938 and 1939 nickels today, plus the war nickels);

3. Clad Roosies;

4. Clad Washington Quarters;

5. Kennedy halves (the most recents ones would have to be purchased from the Mint; and you can still find them in "circulation" [gathering dust at banks], including the silvers);

6. Ike dollars (these are still in "circulation" [gathering dust at banks], including the silvers if you are really lucky];

7. Anthony dollars;

8. Sacagewea dollars; and

9. Presidential dollars.


For me, I have only completed one set.

A silver Roosie set of circulated dimes I plucked from pocket change in the 1960's. It is not worth more than melt, but has sentimental value.

I've been buying proof and mint sets from the Mint since 1999 so I guess I have the complete set of Statehood and territorial quarters. I guess I also have the complete set (so far) of Sac dollars and prez bucks too.

I did all of the Jefferson's in the 90's from change.

I have MS proof sets, all purchased directly from the mint starting 1956 ($2.10 each, back then), thru 2009. So now---guess how old I am.

I done the state quarters from pocket change in exceptional condition , also the jeffersons from 2009 back to the 30's and dimes from 2009 to 64 from change.

I've completed circulated clad sets of Roosevelt Dimes (1965-08), Washington Quarters (1965-2008), & Lincoln Memorial Cents (1959-2009).

I'm just two short of Jefferson Nickels from 1938-2008...still roll searching looking for those stubborn 1950-D and 1955.

Also have all but a short handful of the state quarters and Kennedy Halves from circulation.

For me I've completed the Ikes (from bank searches and, when I was a kid, my dad's Atlantic City winnings), Jeff's (38-60, I spent the rest from 61 on) and Kennedy's (up to 2001, then I got bored and spent the clads).

I came close with the Lincolns with the exception of the keys & semi-keys.

I forgot to mention the Statehood Quarters

And I did not consider Mint and Proof Sets because I was focused more on pocket change [plus coins you can only buy from the mint like current Kennedy Halves].

As a kid I also did the Jefferson Nickels up to 1961 and nver found the 1950D or the 1955. I did find all of the 1938 and 1939 nickels, all of the 1940's nickels, including war nickels and all of the rest up to 1961 except the two mentioned above.

I completed a Morgan set by 1964 from circulation except no 1895 (proof only), had to swap for a 1903 O and got a 1898 O by club rules (another chap had met his quota of 1898O and had to give the next one up to a club member when he found another one. Naturally he kept the one or two best).

The Peace set was complete except I think I had to buy the 1926 D and 1927 S.

Early on, about 1959, I got a bag of 50 from the bank. It had both a 93 S and 89 CC in it. Both were very heavily circulated. I thought I had a really good thing going til I discovered the bank officers had Seated Liberty dollars for pocket pieces.

I found several 93 S over the years. I had to pass some on the other club members. The dealer that bought my best one said it was XF45.

I also found several 1921 Peace and 1928's.

I completed a cent set from 1934 to date in 1965.
...a complete nickel set from 1938 to date in 1974.
...a complete silver roosie set.
...a complete Franklin set.

Still working on a '65 to '98 clad quarter set which is complete except for varieties.
Still working on upgrading a clad dime set which is complete with all the varieties I care about.

Haven't completed the states quarter set yet but I will. It will be chU to very chU but very few gems. Still need three Philly issues.

Don't I wish. I have only heard of 4 uncs in the clad D mint type B's. They were the 1969 D and 1970 D that dlmtorts has (see link) and 2 raw 1969 D ones found by a dealer on ebay.

I completed all these from change, from 1959 (as a taxi cab, shoe shine hustling 6 year old) up to 1967, (as a paper boy). Roosevelt dimes, Franklin Halves, and if you allow acid dates a Buffalo nickel set. The only Jefferson I never found was the 50d, never did find a 32d or s Washingtons. The only Merc I never found was the 16d. I had an old guy who always paid me for his newpaper with old nickel rolls and I actually got all but the 85 V Nickel. I have since completed all 20th century sets with hard earned cash. I not only bought the recent stuff from the mint but completed the statehood quarters with my kids from change and really enjoyed doing that, it brought back some good memories.

I have been working on a unc set of copper memorial cents 59-82 for a few years now. And recently started Jefferson nickels in AU or better. It is a lot of fun

My mother in law has been buying 5 proof sets every year from the US Mint since 1950 for each of her kids. Her husband was in the military and stationed in North Dakota and they spent many a day off going from bank to bank getting a few hundred dollars worth of morgans and sorting thru them. They put together 5 sets of morgans minus the 1895 and a few others. They bought all the GSA's they could afford and get at the time they were offered. I have the complete list of all the coins and the prices paid. He kept a list on index cards. Some of the prices he paid for CC's would blow your mind. $4.80 and $7.50 etc. This coming Xmas (2010) the sets are going to be handed out.

I have done the quarters. I am still looking to upgrade some of them, but I have done every clad quarter except some of the 2009 issues. I have not yet recieved the 6th and final 2009 and I have not gotten any of the 2009 D quarters yet.

I am also only a few dimes away- 1972 D, 2009 P, 2009 D is it for the Clads. I don't know if any 2010s have been made yet, but if they were, then I need them as well.

Working on the cents and nickels. Still a ways to go on both. Nickels are weird in that I get tons of some dates and none of others. (not talking 50 here)

For cents I have found as far back as 1912 in rolls (last week, in fact) but I have not had good luck with D cents. And the ones I do find, are not in good enough shape to keep. And if I won't accept them, then you know they are bad. I have found them all back to 1969, but most need to be upgraded.

The real challenge is what I am doing as I find them: Canadian cents in American circulation. I am not doing too bad, 70s and 80s are complete. 90s are mostly complete. 60s are spotty, 2000s are few and far between- I think I've only gotten three in circulation, but I have a friend in Canada who gave me a bunch so I have them all up to 2008, the last time I saw him in person.
