If anyone here is old enough to remember Lake Placid, then I wonder if you're feeling the same kiddish feeling that
I have about the gold medal game tomorrow. We have the chance to beat Canada twice in their own backyard. No easy
task at all. I guess I could compare that to the NY Jets going twice into Indianapolis and beating the Colts two times.
I'm really pumped for this game. The silver medal will be fine and a great accomplishment having the same or better record
then every team in the tournament. However, gold would be an even greater accomplishment. I will be on the edge of my seat.

The thing about the 1980 game (when I was 17 years old) is that it came during the Cold War. It was two countries (USA and USSR) that were bitter enemies. Each one was battling for world supremacy. Pure hatred and bitterness.
The game tomorrow between the USA and Canada is like two best friends battling it out for bragging rights on the block. It just doesn't have the animosity and emotions involved that would elevate it to 1980 levels.

I fully agree with this post...it was amazing enough for a bunch of amateur US players to beat the mighty Russians in 1980, but the distaste, hatred and fear Americans felt toward the Soviets made that win larger than life itself...the only even that I'd equate it to (non sports) was the US landing on the moon before they did. Tomorrow's game pales in comparison to 1980, really, as players on both sides are professionals (unlike in 1980), and we don't even really dislike Canada, much less wish they were wiped off the face of the earth..

Really pissed me off this olympics too....its in our back yard basically , and we cant get live events....very anticlimactic when you know who wins the gold but you stay up to 11PM to watch it anyway on TAPE DELAY!
the game vs Cananda V US is nothing like it used to be....this is basically similar to the NHL all -star game , all the players are on the same level....there is no David and Goliath anymore like in 1980 and before...
enjoy it while you can..this is the LAST time Hockey will be in the olympics....

Hockey, or NHL players ?
I thought there's going to be hockey in the 2014 games in Russia. Ovechkin and a few other Russian stars have already
said they are going to play. Gary Bettman and the players association have yet to commit to it one way or the other.
Talks are going on between Bettman and Medvedev (Russian hockey president) about the situation.
