NumisMedia FMV Price Guide Opinions Please

Do the prices listed within the NumisMedia FMV Price Guide represent the Fair Market Value of coins? Do you guys ever use it when buying or selling?

It is okay for most coins, but is still very overpriced in some areas. You can get most coins for under Numismedia value. I'm referring to the free retail guide, not the wholesale price guide.

IMHO you can throw out every price guide on earth, because any coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I'd suggest searching completed listings on eBay or Heritage for a general idea of what people are paying for any particular type of coin.

NGC uses numismedia.com to assign values to their registry set coins. It's not a bad guide, really. Their FMV prices tend to be lower than PCGS's Price Guide prices, at least for the series I collect...especially at the higher MS grades where there is a stark difference in pops between the two TPG's.

There are also several coin series that don't trade anywhere near any price guides, again, it depends on the coins.

I see coins go lower than the FMV and some go higher. I often put in bids at FMV, but also look at what they have been selling for in various auctions.
I make my decision after look at several different places. I only bid what I feel comfortable with no matter what.
