I have Buddy Ebsen's obituary's from both Coin World and Numismatic News "laid in" the catalog. Coin World quoted a Donn Pearlman article from the March 1987 issue of The Numismatist that "Ebsen's favorite coin was an 1851 $50 octagonal Augustus Humbert slug from California, with many nicks."

Note the photo of Ebsen's favorite coin, the 1851 $50 octagonal Augustus Humbert slug from California, located in the lower center of the reverse cover photo. And a few other nice coins!

I bought the 1854-O Seated Half out of that sale, while working for Mark Salzberg at the time. It subsequently graded MS68 at NGC - I think it was the first classic type coin that NGC had graded MS68 at the time.

coinguy, this should be your 1854-O Arrows Seated Half Dollar from the Buddy Ebsen Sale, where the coin was "raw and graded Mint State-69!"

    ...

    ...
This Lot realized $31,900 (including the 10% buyer's fee) on the estimate of "$10,000 and up!"

Matches the now finest PCGS-67+ shown on PCGS CoinFacts. (Toning at the left side elbow matches among other things that are more obvious when comparing directly to the 1987 catalog photos.)
