Why delete the "Send LordM to Europe" thread????

Probably ran afoul of forum rules, as I worried it might.

It was very flattering, though, and I thank you all. That would have been one step closer to a dream for me, but it also might have been sticky to have so many people's expectations riding upon my trip, and I wonder if any of the would-be sponsors was expecting a monetary return for a treasure hunting scheme, like a Mel Fisher thing. That would NOT work. And I suspect such a possibility was why the thread got nuked.

All because I cracked a joke the other day about "I'll go to Europe and dig such-and-such for you if you'll pass the hat to send me there," or something. I forget my exact quote. But it was a JOKE, and hopefully clearly visible as such. Don't get me wrong, I would love to go, but would not want to create even the impression of any impropriety. (Much less to look like a beggar.)

Laurent was just being exceedingly generous by actually attempting to pass the hat on my behalf.

PS- for the skeptics who think I might have engineered the whole thing- I promise I didn't have any idea about it. (Not that you'll believe me if you're a skeptic and I'm on your personae-non-grata list, anyway.)

Well, I had a terse message from #1 who said" Quit posting this".

So as of now I guess we will have to.

I can see where it would have gotten out of hand, for sure. And I fully understand why it had to be squashed. But I thank you for the kind thought. I am a little embarrassed, but moved, nonetheless.

Far more valuable than anything I would have found on this hypothetical trip to Europe is the knowledge that I have so many friends here, most of whom I have never met in person, that would take it upon themselves to do something so kind for me.

I promise not to ever crack jokes about "hey, send me to Europe and I'll dig one of those for you" again, lest it be taken literally! image

Maybe I can get up to NEW England this summer, on my own dime, and escape the GA humidity for a vacation and some diggin'. Which I will of course duly report (on the Metal Detecting Forum, where it belongs.)

How many of you bought shares of this scheme? 30-something? Pledges of what, six, seven hundred dollars? Wow. Y'all knock me out.

I owe y'all some good local digstories, for sure. I am off tomorrow. Maybe I will go out.

And there will be a locally-dug giveaway posted momentarily (on the giveaway forum, where it belongs).

This is the WAC, it would have to be a "Una & the Lion" coin.

Well, Rob, let's put it like this: more people signed on to give you a trip than have signed up for free stuff in either my, Laurent or Musky's giveaways image

Y'know, you could still do it. I can set ya up with a .com and blog in 10 minutes. Many, many folks have been able to attract a big enough following to fund trips - during the height of the Iraq war so called "war bloggers" got trips to report in Iraq, political bloggers fund trips to conventions, etc, etc... let me know if you're interested image

And I still think you'd be the perfect host for that show idea image

I missed a poof thread? Man.....you miss a day or two around here and you miss alot.

Whatever it was, if it would be half as entertaining as the yap money thread or the chinese disk stories, then it would be money well spent!

Well, I'd certainly give it some thought (he says, with a little trepidation). But that's no longer a topic for here.

I am uploading a picture for the "LordM Is NOT Going To Europe Anytime Soon (but thanks anyway)" giveaway. Stand by. image

I missed it too. But it seems to be something about helping to sending lordmarcovan on a trip.

    I'm in!!

He was the first, and for a while the only, one to extend a very friendly hand when I first joined this forum. I've always appreciated that.

So if it's for real, maybe someone could PM me with details?

For what it's worth, though I backpedaled and had to take an "aw shucks" stance on the whole thing, I am truly honored that Laurent and others would take such a thing seriously enough to actually attempt it. I hope my "aw shucks" didn't play off the wrong way. If they'd have actually pulled it off, I would have taken up the opportunity- it would have been ungrateful of me not to. But it's a dead issue now, at least on these forums. Thanks to all who picked up on the idea and ran with it. It had my head spinning, too, once I got over the initial shock of it.

It's a shame to see it's gone this morning. I for one just wanted to see a forum buddy get a chance at a nice trip. I would bet that the majority of contributors just wanted to see you get out and have a good time, and of course share your adventures with us.image

I think they deleted it because they are getting ready to sponsor LordM's trip themselves!
  • I still stand by my offer of a share and the give-a-way value to boot. I wanted nothing more than a write up of the adventure in return (but a share of a found hoard would be pretty cool too)! image
