Pricing late Victorian Coppers (Bronze)

So I was watching a 1901 Penny in 65 RD the other day on ebay. This is one of the more common dates in the Veiled Head series, but it made $400. Spink lists it at 35 GBP in the 2010 edition which I thought was high anyway. It's not even the highest graded, there are 2 in 66 RB and 2 in 66 RD in the NGC census.

Am I missing something? I thought I overpaid for my 1890 Mature Bust in 66 RD for about the same money 6 months ago.

I will offer my thoughts on this- I think these are coins that can be replaced easier than real British rarities. No collector should be paying these prices for British copper from this time frame. It makes no sense.

However, I can see spending 700.00 on a 1906 or 07 Eddy VII 1/2 Crown in 64 or higher that is solid for the grade.

While I congratulate airplanenut for making the big sale, $400 or $1000 are ridiculous prices for any 1901 RD penny. 1901 is a dime-a-dozen date for almost every denomination. IMO this is a temporary aberration that diverts money from other coins that are generally worth far more, which is fine by me. I can't see these prices holding up over time.

Incidentally, a 64RD 1901 halfpenny hammered at $299 at the NYINC Heritage non-floor auction. Also ridiculous - I slabbed one (also PCGS MS64RD) less than a year ago at a total cost to me of $25.63 (coin included!!).

I didn't realize that was airplanenut, I bought the 1739 from him by the way.

Agreed. Outrageous prices, nice if you are selling. Who is buying these?

    Who is buying these?

According to the "feedback left for others," the ebay ID was mtncoin. Dunno who that is.

I think it's a dealer, if I remember the ID correctly.

It appears that the promotion of these coins is well underway - not the best use of resources in my view

Obviously Aspen wouldn't pay that price without having a buyer standing by. It doesn't make any business sense otherwise.

Once the market gets saturated with the hundreds of red 1901 pennies that are out there, the buyers of these bits probably will stand to lose a lot of money.
