Any tricks to get buyers to leave feedback?

I looked at my January sales and out of 74 transactions I have approximately 25 feedback from buyers and I would like to increase this from 1/3 to 2/3. I started putting a "please leave 5 stars" slip into all packages, which was working great at first, but now not so good. I usually leave as feedback for buyers: "Fast payment, thank you!" as this is about all you can commend a buyer for nowadays. I'm thinking about adding the 5 star slip, and adding to the feedback something like: "Fast payment, thank you! Please leave feedback!" Would adding this to the buyer's feedback be too much in your opinion? Do you have any tricks to get the buyers to leave feedback?

Thanks in advance,

Patrick

  • I am at about less than 25% with people leaving feedback after they buy something. That is ridiculous. They should make feedback mandatory if they are going to use it to gauge your seller status. Nothing like losing out on stuff because people aren't leaving feedback.

Patrick , have you already left feedback for the buyers ?

If no, there might lie the source of some of the feedback issues.

If yes, then it turns simply into a waiting game.

From your many previous post , I know you tend to be impatient. Impatience here may cost you a negitive.

They have to remove this before they get to the card. I wait two weeks if they have not left feedback I sometimes kindly ask if they are satisfied with the card. Seems to work well for me.

i have 10 items I paid for without feedback, 2 items sold delivered, even back on ebay with new sellers, without feedback left, 2 reminder emails sent as well!

I'd rather have 10 feedbacks from people who WANT to leave it, than have 25 from people who feel PRESSURED to leave it.

As soon as an item is paid for I leave: Super fast payment. A pleasure to deal with. A 5 STAR transaction. Thank you.

If they leave feedback for me, great, if not, no big deal. Those who want to leave it tend to give high ratings, those who feel pressured are a gamble.

My last 3 feedbacks received were 12, 23, and 80+ days after ending, and the items were received in a couple days. Patience grasshopper, you will be rewarded.

BTW: I have left 6582 feedbacks and received 5686 feedbacks, 86.4%. Not too bad, probably above average I'm guessing.

Yes, I leave feedback after payment. I don't want this to go off-topic, but I am a very patient person and should have said in the original post that my feedback from buyers of sportscards is very good...but my real trouble is in the half.com transactions (books/dvd's/games/and other media)...most of the buyers are newbies and it is through these members which I am having a difficult time earning feedback.

You are probably better off not getting feedback from newbies and young'ins. They see a 3 star rating as neither good or bad according to ebay, and probably don't know the ramifications of 3s to sellers. Better to leave them alone.

I would leave sleeping dogs lie. If you are dealing with "newbies" there is a good chance they could give you 4 stars and think they are doing you a favor. Or 3 stars and think that is fair.
I believe that if your feedback numbers are 500 or 5,000 there is sufficient feedback to instill confidence.

What is the fascination with feedback? If you're getting 1/3 of your buyers leaving stellar feedback, then leave it alone. What do you want to do? Pester the other 2/3 with reminders and then complain when they leave you less than 5 Stars or even a neutral or negative for the reminder they find in their email?

Feedback is like an honor system. Not everyone is going to follow through and anyone that expects them to is going to get frustrated very quickly. Just let it go and stop sweating the small stuff!

i won a couple items from a big seller a couple weeks ago; this is what they say in the feedback they left for me (and for everyone else):

"Thanks for a 5 Star sale! Please leave us 5 Stars in each category. Thanks!!"

i find this tacky and super-lame; if u're going to ask me to leave u five stars in each category, at least limit that request to a note in the package (which they also did)--dont waste feedback characters with this canned, generic crap that u leave for every single person that wins something from u. i used to think the generic "A+++" canned feedback line was mundane and a cop-out, but asking me to leave u five stars in the feedback u leave for me takes the cake!! get a life!!
  • Here's what I do. I'd guesstimate about 80% of my buyers leave feedback for me.

    1. Leave this feedback as soon as I receive payment: "Lightning-fast payment, great EBayer!" (If the buyer takes more than three days to pay, I omit the word 'lightning".)

    2. Send an e-mail to the buyer in response to the Paypal automated e-mail: "Thanks for fast payment, your card will ship (the day I plan to ship, usually the next business day)!"

    3. Ship the card when I said I would, with DC. No matter how small the sale, always DC.

I'm not a high-volume seller by any means, but I do have 100+ sales on EBay and I've never had even the slightest problem with a buyer using this method.
I never say a word about feedback. IMO the risk of irritating the buyer is not worth the potential reward.

I don't like it when people pester me for feedback. I do it on my own time and on my own schedule. I do eventually leave feedback on all transactions, but I do it when I want, not when someone "begs" for it.

Feedback is meaningless. As said before above you are much better off today if buyers don't leave you feedback. If they leave you feedback then you're at risk at them not understanding what they're supposed to do for the all important DSR's. Do you really want some idiot giving you less than a 5 on shipping cost when you shipped for free.
  • I don't get why ebay doesn't just impose the simple solution... (I mean after all the company is run by Simpletons)

Free Shipping= No DSR's for that category can be left -an automatic 5 is calculated in...

I mean they make more money when you offer free shipping because the FVF are calculated on the sale price not the net price after postage. As a result you are paying an extra fee to eBay just to ship the item...

But that would be a fair way of doing it and wouldn't allow them to "confiscate" those discounts... so maybe I do understand after all.... image

No, but I don't leave feedback (as a buyer) on anyone (sellers) who does not leave feedback on me first. I think it is a bunch of bull to have a seller wait until he gets good feedback from the buyer first. Afterall, if the seller gets his money in a reasonable time, then that warrants good feedback, regardless of what the buyer does after that. Just MHO.

I always leave feedback as a seller

I leave feedback as a buyer about half the time

If anyone ever sends me an e-mail to leave them feedback i will not leave them feedback on purpose. I have one guy who sends me an e-mail every month since last year to leave him feedback.

I NEVER ask anyone for feedback or 5 stars or anything. I guess its in my nature/personality. I can't stand asking people for anything.
I get a 5% ebay discount, i guess i could work on it and get it higher but I dont care enough.

Under the not so new now system it makes no sense to hold feedback. In the old system it did, as if you held the feedback back you did get more positives and less negatives.

I always leave feedback first now....or at least almost always. However, I do find logic in waiting until a transaction is complete before leaving feedback in general. Until a transaction is complete on both sides, how does one know if it is a good transaction? I am sure I am not the only one with 100s of horror seller stories.

What's the point of waiting? The only feedback a seller can give is positive, and if you leave a positive that's worded to hurt the buyer's feelings, then you could get a time out from Ebay. Leave the feedback right away when paid as it won't help or hurt you in any situation that will occur. Almost all Ebay transactions are going to work out just fine, so you're only risking getting the buyer riled up if you're both waiting for each other to make the first move on feedback.
  • As I noted I always leave feedback right away now, and I agree with everything in your reply. Again, you should leave feedback right away as a seller now as it does not help you or anyone else to do anything otherwise.

That however does not change the fact that things happen after purchase and many times because of the buyer.

A month ago a buyer bought an earth rock that was changed by the impact of a meteorite (a piece of impactite if you will). Right after the buyer e-mails me, sorry bought the wrong item, meant to buy a meteorite. 10 mins. later they e-mail, "nevermind" I will just go ahead and a get a meteorite as well and give both as a gift. I did not see the messages until they were both there.

So a week later I get a negative from the buyer for not cancelling the transction and communication (I do e-mail when a item is packaged). Buyer said to "nevermind" so that is what I did. We were able to work it out and I got it removed so I am at 100% positive feedback (1000+) again, I had to keep apologizing and accept total blame for customer screw up and still got belittled by the buyer. This is just like 1 in 10,000 possible things that could happen....before the transaction is complete.

The thought I put into writing this post is the most time I've ever taken to think about feedback. It's meaningless, insignificant and pointless. If people want to leave feedback they're going to and your feedback rating will be where it should in the long run. If people don't want to take the time to leave feedback there's nothing you can do to convince them. I have 1600+ feedback and a 99.7% rating without ever asking for feedback once.

Good attitude, IMO. Quite frankly, any system where a single negative is such a big deal is fundamentally flawed. No seller is perfect, and quite frankly no one's feedback should reflect perfection. Now, don't get me started on how flawed the DSR's are. In a perfect world, an overgraded card should warrant a 4 in the DSR for item description, but it's just such a killer to the seller that I never do it unless they are habitual, or send me a whole bunch from one auction run.

The only time I would respond to a request for feedback is if the buyer/seller is new to ebay and needs to get his # up.
  • I am at 84%. Feedback left 4367 feedback received 3669. Never have asked for feedback either way buyer/seller and never will.
the Ebay rating system is a joke, a real bad joke when some joker leaves you 1's or 2's across the board.

I just bought an item off a seller, looked at his feedback and seen he was a slow shipper, I wasn't in a hurry and he was the cheapest, so after I paid and waited 19 days for the product to show up, I gave him 5 stars across the board, Too many buyers want next day delivery and can't wait the reasonable amount of time which I believe is 7 to 10 days in good weather. Same is true for sellers wanting paid within 1 to 24 hours after the auction ends. In the real world invoices read 2/10 net 90 days and this is after the buyer has the product. JMHO image

I don't do a lot of volume on eBay, but I'd say 90% of my buyers leave feedback, and my DSRs are all 5.0s. I'm sure many different approaches can be successful, my approach is pretty simple:

When the buyer pays, I ship within 24 hours (same day if possible). I never charge for shipping. After I ship the item, I send the buyer a quick note thanking them for their purchase and prompt payment and that I have left them positive feedback. Then, I state something to the effect of "if, after receiving the item, you are highly satisfied with the transaction, I would greatly appreciate 5 star feedback across all categories. Thanks again for your purchase and consideration."

I never ask them for feedback again after this initial request, and I don't put any inserts into their package. Leaving feedback is at their discretion, and I respect that. Unlike others who have responded, feedback is very important to me. First, I want to make sure my customer is satisfied, and feedback helps confirm this. Second, because I don't do nearly as much volume as some of you, I need a minimum number of feedbacks to continue the 20% powerseller discount off final value fees.

I don't think there is a "trick" to getting users to leave feedback. Just offer a high level of service, communication, and value, and the feedback will take care of itself. Not everyone will leave it, but most will, and their satisfaction will be reflected in your DSRs.

There are 2 different places you see your DSR ratings. If you click the seller's feedback it will show a 12 month average and it's not hard at all for a good seller to maintain an all 5 average. The second place is your seller dashboard, where you can see your averages for the last 30 and 90 days, and that's what drives sellers nuts. If you're all 5 in there I would be shocked.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092

Yeah, seriously. I also think playing the DSR game is a waste of time. It's obviously a flawed system so why kill yourself to try and save 5% or even 20% on your final value fees? Why play a game that's so obviously fixed against you? Most of us don't sell enough for this to make even a splash in our wallet, and we could all make that money up elsewhere by putting our time and effort into something more worthwhile.
