original toning vs (re)toning

These topics of originality are a great exercise in learning, one of the more subtle issues for me is understanding the main characteristics of original vs retoning (post dip), and I don't necessarily mean artificial toning. Are there main markers? I get golden rim toning with whitish interior and most likely assume that this is retoning, but what are other markers, that experienced collectors see as (re)toning? and how grey are those markers.?

-Golden toning that is better described as pissy color than golden.

-Haze or dullness brought on by the dipping.

-Spotted or uneven toning. Can be brought on by a bad dip/dip residue.

-The edges. It is more unbelievable that an edge, especially reeded, is blast white as well. (I am thinking 'old' coins here.)

-Past the toning progression of golds/yellows, alot of it is trying to spot enhanced, accelerated toning.

thanks for the clarification on gold color...and I am primarily talking about older coins.

I see a lot of spotted toning that I did not really associate with retoning, interesting point.
