Who is or has collected Mexican 8R by mint?

I admit I got the bug to have a collection of 8R's with each Mexican mint represented.

I have Zacatecas 1827A0-Zs, just picked this one up to cover Guanajuato.
I would enjoy hearing the experiences of anyone who has completed or attempted the set.

  • I haven't tried one of each mint, but looking at that EoMo on the cover of Resplandores makes me want to. I read the title a different way, since I kind of hoard the better quality Zacatecas pieces from the lots I handle. I have owned at least one of every mint except EoMo at one time or another in my inventory. That said, I have never seen in-hand a truly choice piece in any grade from GC, only pics. If I was going to do the set I'd have to go for coins struck from un-hubbed dies, too.
  • If you're going to specialize in the Cap & Rays series you'll HAVE to buy Resplandores, the Bible of the series. It's a little pricey [I paid $125 for mine] but it's essential. A complete set of all dates/mints/assayers has never been achieved and would, in fact, be impossible, even for the wealthy collector. That's because there are several coins where there are only one or two known [for example: 1860 Pi RO, which one unique coin exists]. However, I encourage your quest, it's a fine and varied series. I myself collect chopmarked coins and since the Cap & Rays was the principal trade coinage of the 19th century it features prominently in my collection.

One of the books I hoped to acquire was "A Guide Book of Mexican Coins 1822 to Date" by T.V. Buttrey & Clyde Hubbard.

Thank you for recommending "Resplandores" by Mike Dunigan and J.B. Parker; I was unaware of the book.image

I had thought that a 14 example mint set would be easy but I guess the challenges in this set will be the EoMo [Estado de Mexico], GC [Guadalupe y Calvo] and Ce [Real de Catorce] mints.

I really have to do research on values-I assume nice coins are above catalog and mine aren't too recent.

    Thanks Lancastercoin and ColinG.image

  • Speaking of Mike Dunigan (I know him personally), this man is THE MAN to do business with if you are serious about Mexico, Laurent. He IS pricey on his material but DOES have an invertory like no other. Mike is located in Texas. You might be able to order an autographed copy of the book directly from him. His phone number is 817 737 3400. Lourdes is usually the one who answers the phone.

I have met Mike- he knows the series better than anyone I have ever met- I have his book and if anyone is series about the Cap and Rays- the book is required and well worth the money

I don't think I am speaking out of school, but he talked with me for awhile- he likes the subject and welcomes the questions.

It is good to see a new addition to the mexican 8 reales.

I got started on them a couple of years ago after getting bored of US silver dollars.

I started out collecting by mint. I would say that 9 mints are fairly common, 2 mints are more challenging, and 3 are difficult.

I second that the purchase of Resplandores is well worth it. I reference it prior to any purchase and have also acquired a plate coin or two along the way.

Looking back, I have more from Guanajuanto mint than others. I try to obtain nice pieces and different dates.

Great advice in this post. Pick-up "Resplandores" from Mike and be ready for a very exciting area of collecting! Another neat set would be all of the different eagles used in the Cap 'n Ray series.
  • The Buttrey/Hubbard book is only ok, but usually can be found for only $3-4 from booksellers at coin shows, and is worth that.
