Buying a box of 2010... what should I get, and where?

Hi;

I am thinking of buying a hobby box of 2010 cards. I haven't collected in almost 20 years. What should I buy? Bowman seems to be a quality set with quality inserts. The Topps inserts look a little lame to me.

Also, what are the best online stores to order cards from these days?

Thanks!

Matt

  • I love Bowman Draft Picks because I live in a minor league town so I see a lot of those guys. Plus I think it is a good product for the money. I would just Bing a buy it now because with some shipping rates form some sites you will pay the same or more on eBay.

    Forester,

    Welcome back to the hobby!

What you purchase usually depends on your collecting goals. For example, if you like to collect sets, then Topps regular cards are excellent! If you like to speculate on Rookies, then there are certain boxes for that. If you like GU or Autos, then there are certain boxes that cater to that.

My kids and I usually purchase a couple jumbo HTA Topps boxes on ebay and have a blast sorting the players by teams. We then sell the autos or GU cards and then I split the cash for them to have.

Give us an idea of what you'd like to collect - the market has broadened in the past 20 years, as you will be able to tell!

    Best collecting wishes,

Topps Heritage comes out this week - highly recommend that especially if you're an older collector

see the Heritage thread on the front page that more than likely won't fall off the front page for the next 4 or 5 months

I am a Heritage collector and will be getting a bunch of this next week, but I opened A Jumbo box of Topps last week and had a blast with iut. Tons of inserts with an auto, a silk patch, a game used, and a REGGIE Jackson hat patch from the Yankees. I loved ripping that box. I haven't had this much fun in years. I also bought a blaster of this at wal mart with somewhat less success, still loved it. I did get two packs with all black borders, not sure what it was. Also, the Jumbo box got me a complete set

  • Go with a Jumbo HTA box of 2010 Topps along with a couple Retail(Wal-Mart/Target) blasters. I think you'll enjoy the Topps Million card redemption cards and maybe hit an auto or something nice. Otherwise, Allen & Ginter looks like a nice set!
  • The 2010 jumbo HTA boxes offer real good value (though they will cost close to $100), Bowman draft & prospects is great for prospects, and heritage for old style cards ( based on 1961 Topps this year). Really depends on what your interests are.

Seconding (or fifth-ing) the Topps Jumbo/HTA box.

You'll get the complete 330 card base set, a black parallel #'d 59, a neat hat relic #'d 99 (that sells pretty well), 1 autograph, and 2 jerseys.

AND 10-12 of the Topps Million redemptions, which are a good time.

  • Well... I have looked into things a little more and listened to a lot of advice. I have always been a fan of Topps cards, but this year's design doesn't do much for me. Also, I find a lot of their inserts seem like silly gimicks. I have never been a fan of the idea of game-used cards. On the other hand, my big frustration with Bowman is they don't have complete stats on the backs and I am a big stat nut! So, unfortunately I don't know if I am much further ahead yet! image

You sound like more of a traditionalist. Are there any sets from your childhood that you are interested in? Maybe a couple of dream cards from your previous time in the hobby that you couldn't afford then but can now?
