Card backs and their importance

I'm not thinking of centering, I have just kinda come to the conclusion that I prefer seeing career stats much more than just the past year. It's fascinating to see how a player progresses from the minors to the majors. It's almost enough to make me move away from the years where they display last year only (60 for example) to a year that does (like 61). Anyone influenced by card back stats?

Growing up, I much preferred the ones with multi-year stats. To this day, the backs of the 71 cards do nothing for me.

Tho they do take up alot of space for a veteran, I prefer seeing all the yrs of play also.

topps always did a great job with card backs

    +1
  • I like to see how a player was acquired. Some of the early 90's cards go into detail on this. Example, player A was traded on Dec 31 1990 for Player B and C.

I enjoy politically incorrect cartoons on the backs of cards.

No shortage of those in the 50's sets.

Toons are good but usually accompany only the limited career stats. The cool ones are back in the day when "John works as a xxxxx during the off season". Hard to even imagine now.

This is not an issue to which I have given considerable thought.

Lol, I'm getting older Boo and maybe milder. Or maybe not. We could go at it. Or not. OTW actually said it best.

I always liked the Mid-80s Fleer issues for how far back they'd go with stats in the minors.

That's how I found out what a can't miss prospect Ron Kittle was. He was from *just* before my time, but 90HR in 2 seasons in the minors!

They don't have to be politically incorrect. I just like cartoons. Still haven't grown up.

I like career stats as well. You get a good appreciation of how long they were in the league and if they had multiple teams, who did they play for the longest.

Sure, ya could look at career stats at some website or in the Baseball Encyclopedia...and I dunno why, but to me it's more fun looking at those stats on the back of a baseball card. image

The more info on the backs, the more I was interested. I used to go over every card, again and again when I first started collecting. When it was a whole week before I had enough scratch to buy more packs. I learned a lot about baseball just from reading the trivia questions and did you knows from the mid 80s Topps stuff.
