Forgery?

Noticed this auction as I was looking to add a few Lincy's to the collection. No factory serial numbers and the autographs are rather suspect when compared to all of the exemplars that I have in hand. Lincecum auction. Does anyone know if these are legit? Personally, I don't think so, or I would've Bing'd the pair at that price point.

  • Definitely the back-doored unsigned refractors signed by someone other than Tim.
  • To me they don't look authentic, but how would someone forge the Bowman "Authentic Autograph" stamp on the card?

My guess is that this is "overstock" that made it out the backdoor and someone added the less than stellar forgeries of Lincecum's signature to them. I wasn't suggesting that the cards were forgeries -- fake cards would be counterfeits.
  • What sportscardtheory said.

  • Are you kidding me? As collectors we have to worry about TOPPS "authentic autograph" cards being forgeries..............jeez.....first it's the Pro Line crimping fakes, then the Star Pics stickers fakes, then the Topps Rookie Premier fakes, then the Fleer Bankruptcy fakes, and now this?

Yes. But if you know what cards to be aware of and how they are supposed to look, it isn't hard to avoid them.

True, it isn't hard to avoid them if you know what you're looking for. I consider myself in the upper echelon of the hobby informed and I was not aware of the backdoor material. Granted, I've fallen out of the modern loop over the past few years and it was only my experience in knowing the autograph and that the cards SHOULD be serial numbered that alerted me to the possibility that these were fakes (back doored and forged). Most buyers would not be armed with this information and would be little more than lemmings jumping off the cliff.
