how does gai (the old flips) compare to grading vintage to bvg or psa?

They are a real craps shoot. Some are good and others are bad. I have 3 purchase crossovers that I cracked out. A 1955 Bowman GAI 8 Mantle. It came back PSA 8. A 1958 GAI 8.5 Clemente PSA evid of Trim. 1955 koufax Gai 7. It came back PSA 5. That's been my experience.
