What's the story behind the 1958 Topps #145?

Okay, everybody knows that the 1958 Topps #145 was never issued. But what's the whole story behind it? I remember reading in some baseball card book from 1976 that the guy that was supposed to be on it was pulled from the set because he was being accused of some kind of criminal wrongdoing. According to the book, Topps is "almost positive none got out".

So does anyone else know more about this story? And, what do you think would be the impact on the hobby if someday a copy of this card did in fact surface?

Thi is what I found on the net....

The 1958 Topps baseball card set consisted of 494 baseball cards numbered 1-495. Card number 145 (not issued) was supposed to feature Ed Bouchee, but his card was withdrawn after he was suspended from the game for the entire season due to off-field misconduct.

    From Wikipedia:

After the 1957 season was over, Bouchee was arrested for exposing himself to young girls. He eventually pled guilty to a series of charges, including indecent exposure. Bouchee was sentenced to three years of probation, spent a few months in a psychiatric institution in Connecticut, and then was allowed to return to the Phillies on July 1, 1958.[

I love the 58 set, one of my all time favorite Topps sets.

What I hate is that they we're too dumb to realize that after they signed Musial in late 58 and made an All Star card for him, they could have went back and made a regular card of Musial #145. How awesome would that have been?

In the spirit of the 1955 Topps Cards that Never Were, someone should put together an Ed Bouchee card with him leering out the the bushes wearing a trench coat. But seriously, exposing oneself is a crime. Don't do it!!!!

You know, you got a point there; did kids back then even realize there was no #145? I mean, I don't think Topps did checklist cards for that year, right?

Interesting. Glad Topps didn't include it. At least the kids didn't have to chase a ghost card like the 33 Lajoie.
