Garbage Pail Kids Series 1 Questions....

Hello, I collected Garbage Pail Kids when I was a kid, I think series 3 was in my time. I am interested in putting together a set of Series 1. What is the difference between the glossy or matte (besides obviously the finish of the card)? Are the numbers/values equal? If I bought a box or pack, how do I know if the cards are glossy, matte or a mix? If putting together a PSA graded set, do people stick to either all glossy, or matte? Does PSA list glossy or matte on the holders? Lots of questions, but thanks for help in tackling them! Michael

    Well, I won't be much help, but I bought a box in the mid-1990's and put together only one complete set. All the cards were the matte finish. The extras make almost a complete second set.

    It is my experience that you should put together all the same type, e.g. all matte or all glossy. I think PSA designates the finish.

    I am glad I bought mine when I did. I think even then it was expensive, but don't remember the cost. I bought it from a company named Barrington Square. I looked them up a couple of years ago but could not find them, so I do not know if they are still around. The companhy helped me filled in many missing singles from other series I needed.

    Forgot to say, the difference in cards as you ask...None, other than value. From research I completed on eBay, it appears the glossy goes for a little bit more than the matte.

    I know almost everything about GPK's. As for the packs, there isn't much way to tell which is Glossy and which is Matte, as far as I know. I have noticed O-Pee-Chee packs have always had Matte cards when I opened them. Seems like most packs I open nowadays have Matte cards so I'm guessing there are more of those.

    As for the sets, it's not a real big deal to have a half Glossy and half Matte set. Although a lot of people like to make a separate set of each. But you would have no problem selling a mixed set.

    PSA doesn't list Glossy or Matte on the holders. There are tons and tons of variations that they neglect, which sucks. It would create one heck of a master set if they did. Just in Series 1, there are 340 different possible cards. There is a great checklist on www.wgpkr.com

    As for the values, all are basically the same except for Nasty Nick, Evil Eddie, Adam Bomb and Blasted Billy. Nasty Nick is worth the most, Evil Eddie and Adam Bomb are close in price followed by Blasted Billy. Prices can vary a lot for PSA 10's. Bad Brad and Cranky Frankie as easy 10's so they don't sell for a whole lot. One of the #4's (I forget which one) is a tough 10 and should sell for a lot.
