Rim Dings...can they sometimes be repaired? (Pictures Added)

I just received a Morgan dollar that is a nice AU except for a rim Ding. I almost looks like it could be tapped down to make it less noticeable and possibly get it into a PCGS holder.

Has anyone ever repaired a rim ding with successful results?

  • I wouldn't count on it working out well and even if it did I'd definitely have to think of it as coin doctoring.

Rim dings = scrap silver unless the coin is key, semi key or somehow rare.

Try it and show before and after pics. I think it would be a very cool thread.image

I would think that any attempt to repair a ding of this nature would be obvious since tapping on the obverse or reverse edges of the coin would not cause the rim area of the coin to fill out.

I'd think you'd be left with a depression in the rim surrounded by obverse and reverse flat spots.

However, give it a shot and post the results.

That coin is heavily cleaned/polished. I guess you could try to smooth out the rim ding as your coin is a good "practice" coin, but I'm not sure the results will be great.

    ditto
  • For the sake of argument, I think it would be pretty difficult to do anything with them, especially where the dentils have been compressed. I suppose someone "good" could grind some of the area around it, then try and retone. You certainly would be left with a less desirable piece.

I think that if it was an otherwise nice and original coin, which it isn't, that it might very well grade. OTOH, this coin has been harshly cleaned and has surfaces that are pretty far from original, so it's a no-grade regardless.

Genuine/Details holder if sent into a TPG.

    Thanks for posting the pictures.

IMO, any flattening or tapping on that coin would most certainly crush the dentils before having any affect on the actual ding. I think you'd just end up with a coin that not only has a ding, but also has flat spots on the edge.

Correct. It would be sorta like using a wire brush or an angle grinder to remove toning. Yeah it'll remove the toning alright..... but.....

The movement of metal on a coin for any reason is doctoring and it totally
un acceptable to most collectors. Such displacement is not the same as good
honest wear. I know of no way that this feat can be accomplished ,without
    leaving a worse appearing coin.

I've seen quite a few attempted repairs on rim dings, I haven't seen many that would fool anyone that looked at the coin.

The coin has been harshly cleaned/polished. It will never get into a PCGS holder. The fact that you thought there was a chance that it could be slabbed by PCGS tells me that you need to step back from buying and learn how to detect various types of cleaning.

It is not "a nice AU."

There are some real pros that can repair coins out there.
They can even repair holed coins to the point that you have
to look really hard to see if anything has been done to the coin, and
many would not be able to detect the repair.

I don't think there is anything wrong with repairing a coin as long
as you don't try to sell it as a non-repaired coin. A repaired coin
should never "fool" a TPG and get into a clean slab. The coin you posted in
the OP does not fall into this class as the repair would cost more than the coin is worth.

I guess that you need to step back from posting and learn about the new PCGS genuine slab.
