Who can name the 6 MLB players on top of '66 wax box?

image

I wasn't even born in 1966 but, I did just get this colorful '66 Topps EMPTY wax pack box today.

Do you know who these MLB players are? The only one I got was naturally, #7 Mickey Mantle on the end.

I am very curious and will not not try to google it but will wait for YOU to tell me.

I am excited to see the knowledgeable and fast responses here...

Thanks!

  • #2 Pete Rose?
  • It is NOT Peter Edward Rose, i just looked closer, that Reds guy says, "Co....." on the back. I thought, Dave Conception but I just learned that Dave Concepción was signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent in 1967, so probably wasn't him.

There is another Yankee there FYI.

I would be able to tell all on a 1976 box, this is fun!

#4 appears to be an A's catcher.

    4 is Phil Roof?

    lol Alston Howard

    I think it's Elston Howard.

Edited to add: I'd have thought the Reds player if not Rose would be Helms.

    Good for you.

    That's not Pete Rose - it's probably a pitcher.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
The Yankee Pitcher is probably Stottlemeyer.

Not sure who the Red is.

Gordy Coleman played on that team, not sure of any pitcher with 'Co' in his name.

Looks like Giants catching gear to me (orange shin guards) - Ozzie Virgil??

  • Possibly the first picture frame is a picture of catcher Earl Battey of the Twins?
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
To be honest I thought the catcher was Earl Battey, someone mentioned it was Howard.

You may be right - I can't see the scan very well - I think the other catcher might be Billy Bryan.

From the images my best guesses would be left to right:

    1. Earl Battey
    2. Pete Rose
    3. Frank Howard
    4. Billy Bryan
    5. Mel Stottlemyre
    6. Mickey Mantle
  • stevekstevek Posts: 30,254 ✭✭✭✭✭
I agree with WinPitcher on Stottlemyre, although I'm not 100% sure.

Looking at it again closer, that Reds player just might be Rose - but not sure.

    Quick look and I say

blue background....,looks like Frank Howard (but he batted right)........ and Mantle

besides the Kansas City catcher....others are tougher because of blurry scan.

It sure looks like Hondo. It wasn't uncomon for Topps to use reverse negatives in their advertising since they usually airbrushed the logos...

    A Better pic of a 1966 box

1 Could be Howard or Battey but leaning toward Howard because Battey was a bit stockier
2 Gordy Coleman "CO" on the back and an 8 on the front
3 Could be a reversed Frank Howard
4 Can't make out the numbers on the sleeve
    5
    6 Mickey Mantle

Anyone else think that the third player looks a lil like Kaline?

With the better scan I'll amend to:

    1. Earl Battey
    2. Gordie Coleman
    3. Frank Howard (reverse negative)
    4. Billy Bryan
    5. Hal Reniff
    6. Mickey Mantle

The jersey just looks wrong for Hondo. How about White Sox - Skowron??

With the better scan, that's definitely not Rose, and I don't think now that's Stottlemyre.

I'm leaning to Frank Howard on that one as well.

That's definitely Coleman. #18 on the front of the jersey and the CO showing on the back name plate... Also think it's Reniff and not Stots...
