Opinions on these two 1968 Kahn's Johnny Bench PSA 8

Hello,
I was looking at Memory Lane's recent auction results and noticed two 1968 Kahn's Johnny Bench rookie cards were auctioned off at the same time.

One sold for $1184 and the other sold for $584 (prior to 17.5% buyers premium). The one that sold for $1184 had a little extra portion of the card at the very bottom. My question is why did this one sell for so much more? If you look closely you will also see that the shorter card has a normal corner on the top left. The larger card has a rounded corner on the top left. Any thoughts on this? Is the larger card a tougher variation?

Thanks.

It's not a variation. All of the cards were rounded at the top with an extra tab at the bottom. The card shown in the bottom scan is just cut smaller than the top one. Here's a scan of a card showing the entire (uncut) bottom tab:

The tops of each card have rounded corners and another rectangular shaped piece that extended around the pack of hot dogs to connect to the bottom tab. Unfortunately, I don't have any complete "cards" to show you.

Oops, forgot to answer your question. No good answer for the price difference. Better scan, two people having to have the card, buyers who don't like the Kahn's cards that are cut down so much (2nd card), people hating on the PSA slabs with the "baggy". None of those seem like good reasons, but you never know.
  • Hey Bob,

The bottom scan appears to have a square top left corner, like you pointed out, it is supposed to be rounded - could it be that PSA missed a trim job? That would ceratinly explain the lower price.

No, all of these are cut, even the ones with rounded corners at the top. PSA often lowers the grade if the card is cut too short, but they should always grade it. Here are two (mislabeled) Kahn's cards of Matty Alou that show the lower grades for square cuts.
