A question about card pack feelers and such

Ok I was wondering if it is possible to weight packs of cards to find certain inserts such as GU??? Recently I went to a card shop and happened to be in a back room with the owner who was looking for some cards that I needed to finish two sets. When I was their I noticed a scale. Not a normal scale but a scale that costs a few hundred dollars(like $500 or so) The scale had decimals up to ten thousands I believe. The only reason I know this is because my chemistry teacher has one that is exactly like it that she uses to weigh compounds. Do GU cards weigh more or less then regular cards? I know some packs only give you a certain amount of cards if a GU is in a pack (USUALLY ONE LESS) but that still wouldn't change the weight difference always.

  • yes.. at least in hockey.. the game used weigh more than regular cards. They may leave 1 card out so it is harder to feel that there is a thicker card.. but they still weigh different than reg cards

Ok so we agree that there is a weight difference. So how much would it be?? larger than a gram, tenth gram, hundredth of a gram? or smaller??? Just trying to find out the feasability of them weighing packs

  • I havent done it... but i know from opening a couple boxes of UD Ice hockey... the jersey cards are about the size of 2.5 reg cards... you can feel the difference
  • Maybe he is just a drug dealer.........lmao

That would be a great story "No officer, the scales are to weigh baseball cards"
  • Some of the card companies;like Leaf are combating feelers & weighers by inserting the thick blank filler card in packs.
Other companies are also researching ways to detract dishonest hobby shop owners & pack feelers from ripping off others.
They know to retain thier integrity they need to address this issue;otherwise they'll see a serious turndown in sales.
We seldom buy packs & when we do,we always ask the shop owner to open a new box;if they refuse we just leave.Just our thoughts.

  • Yes. You can tell the difference on a scale by weighing the packs. Last year I bought two boxes of 2000 UD Legends baseball (i believe thats what it was) and just for the heck of it, I weighed the packs on my postage scale at work and there were four packs that were 1 tenth of an ounce heavier and so I opened those four first and all four of them had a jersey or bat card. It really made opening the other 44 packs rather anti-climatic though.
If a card shop has a scale in the back, I would definitely not buy packs there.

  • Now the question is, where can I buy such a scale LOL If you guys see me selling loose packs on ebay don't buy them image
  • Don't crucify the store or the store owner yet, the scale may be a tool for his shipping purposes, He may have his own postage meter which requires a scale. I have a scale myself for shipping purposes but I don't deal in wax. Owning a scale does not make one guilty. The benefit of the doubt is in play here.
