Coin predictions 2010 and 2011

It is my opinion that 2010, much like 2009, will see coin prices
steady with a continuing downward bias. While quality coins will
with strenuous effort be available, the bulk of nicer things for
collectors will be held off the coin market for better times to come.

I am truly surprised that the Barber and seated series seem to be in a
slight air pocket. Nice stuff ,even in circulated condition is still tough to
find but well worth the effort. This may well be the year to continue to
accumulate nice quality coins in whatever grade one can afford. I see
2011 as the year that the coin market will start a slow upward move.
I am still astounded at the continuing softness of Classic Commems.
Truly nice looking specimens in MS-66,67 and 68 are really not that
available and yet the decade long downward slope is continuing. May be
a good time to nibble at nice NT specimens when they become available.
The price may not be as cheap as you might hope for, but they will not be
in multiples of the grade price either.

Morgan Dollars seem to be everywhere. It seems as though everyone has
cleaned out their closets of their Morgans to raise cash. Again, If you buy
a Morgan, be sure that the face and neck are free of detracting marks. When
you buy a MS-66 or 67, be sure that the grade is all there and then some.
PL and DMPL are always good to put away ,but bad ones are all over the place,
be very , very picky before you buy. Perhaps one out of 50 really are PQ for the
grade.

If you look at many dealers advertised coins, where they once proudly carried
MS-65 and MS-66 Type, they are now showing MS-63 and MS-64 grades. Nothing
wrong with these grades, but it does show that the higher grades are in hiding.

When you buy proof type coins, be sure that you get all the quality for the price.
Many PR coins have cloudy fields due to someone dipping excessively or playing
with them. Also a PR-65 should be a true gem and not showing a plethora of flesh
wounds. In the present soft market, your money should be buying more coin and
not marginal coins.

A special note, a number MS coins, while they may not show wear, do seem to have
compression flat spots on the devices. These are not always soft strikes, but are in
fact flattening due to stacking of coins. There may not be a loss of metal, but at least
to my eye, the flat areas are disturbing and I will not buy such coins at the full price.

I believe that PMs will begin their long predicted explosion as inflation becomes more
evident, especially in 2011. This will I believe give an upward shove to the price of
collectibles such as RARE COINS.

Remember use 2010 to upgrade your collection with great care. Do not waste your
precious money on ugly truly yucky coins. There are great differences in a really nice
VF-35 Barber Half and a really ugly VF-35 Barber Half. Be picky, picky, picky.

Gold coins are always nice to have, but generic gold can fluctuate greatly with the
price of gold. However, If you want an insurance policy, then collect and hold gold.
If you want to become a day trader, then you have my deepest sympathies.
