What's the Card that got Away?

About 20 years ago I went to a small show. Some dealer had some raw Cracker Jacks commons that were breathtaking. He wanted $50 apiece for them. That was a lot of money then, so I did not buy any. How many times have I kicked myself in the subsequent years?

Also, at the 2nd Atlanta National, I bought some raw blazing 61s from a dealer. I stopped when the cash ran out, refusing to go to the cc to get more. Every one came back an 8 or 9, including several Hi #s.

Live and learn.

Case of 86-87 Fleer Basketball at TG&Y in spring on 1987 for $200. I opted for half a case of 87 Donruss instead. image

    Visa.
  • 1986 Topps baseball and Garbage Pail Kids packs that were sitting right next to the 86 Fleer basketball.

Bought about 10 commons from 1952 Topps about 2 years ago at our weekend flea market for $40. He had about 50 more. Probably could have had them all for about $200 total. All graded 5-7.

Mine was a set of 1911 C55 hockey. It was a complete set for $1500.00 I was newly married and broke. The dealer even let me take them home and said I can pay over 2 months. My wife made me take them back the next day. The set was in EX to EX/MT condition. image

As discussed in an earlier thread a few days ago, I had been looking for a 1989 Topps Heads Up Ozzie Smith for about 5 years. I missed a Buy It Now for $39.00. I missed it by 2 hours.

    Very similar to Bill's...

The gas station by the baseball park had 1986 Fleer basketball packs right next to 87 Topps baseball. I must have been in there a dozen times and bought 1-2 packs of baseball every time.

I had nightmares about that for years.

I forget if they were asking 1200 or so. I had just sold my Jordan rookie and a nice 66 topps mantle and think I had about 1000 on me. It was from an unopned pack Mr mint had and I believe a local dealer here Larry Young sold it and a year or so later I hear it graded a 10. Course my response was.."what is a graded card"

At a card show in Atlanta in 1987-88, I spotted a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle just inside the front door for $200, and it was in VG shape IIRC. That would've pretty much blown my wallet for the day, so I decided to walk the floor to see what else I might find.

I didn't find anything else, so I proceeded back to the dealer with the Mantle. Just as I approached, I noticed a woman reaching into her purse and pulling out her wallet. In front of her was the Mantle.....she was buying it! image

Oh, I was royally ticked off!!!!! image

Well, as luck would have it, I picked up a PSA 3 '52 Topps Mantle in 2003. It just cost me $5K more than the earlier one image

    But I have it! image

1990, a friend's brother had boxes and boxes of really nice cards from the 60s and 70s. He was selling all dirt cheap. I didn't have much cash, so I bought a few stacks of Topps minis and left the rest. I have no idea what happened to the rest, but they probably went cheap to some lucky dealer at a card store.
  • 1998 Flair Showcase Perfect 10 - Ken Griffey Jr. serial 6 / 10.

Was stolen from me about 6 years ago. No idea what it's worth but there's only 10 of them and I know those Griffey collectors are pretty crazy.
