Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

simple question -- you can have one of the 2 -- which do you choose?

Say you finally get a nice card that you were waiting for.

It was a tough one, but you get a surprise and find 2 of them. You can only keep one. Its a low pop card. Lets say 3 10's 12 9's 29 8's.

You have a choice.

PSA 9 (OC) or PSA 8 .

Which do you choose and why ? For all sake and purposes there are no extreme circumstances and the cards recieved the grade they should have....

PSA 8 all day long over the PSA 9OC

I would take the 8 as well. Off center cards bother me.

    NQ all day, every day.

I'm really surprised PSA still uses the qualifiers. From the very beginning, collectors have always preferred NQ cards and the sell prices have always reflected this.

Having a card with a qualifer makes it as undesirable as a card w/o a qualifier 2-3 grades lower, so why not just give the card that grade?

Maybe this affects older, vintage cards differently. Since I've always dealt with cards from the 80s-present, I wouldn't know.
  • 8. I hate qualifiers in general, and I hate OC cards in particular.

  • I agree with the rest.

    NQ

    ...............

I have a 9 (OC) that is perfectly centered on the front.

    The back is waaaayyyy off.

The value of the card is MUCH less than that of an NQ 8.

  • give me the 8 anytime - you might have a chance to bump an 8 to a 8.5 or a 9 someday.

    PSA 8 everytime. I don't want a qualifier.

Interesting how we all want more detail from PSA regarding why a card grades below what we think it should, but then we also want them to eliminate Quals? So, if a card you submit comes back 2 grades lower, did you miss a wrinkle or is it OC just a hair too much?

I always thought that the NQ designation on the submission form told them to not use Quals and grade down instead. Is that not correct?

Depends SOLELY on the cards in question. I cannot blindly answer based on hypothetical assumptions. I have seen many PSA 9 OC cards that should be straight PSA 8's and PSA 8's that could be PSA 6's. A prime example is 1972 Topps Baseball. Some PSA 9 OC's are off a bit T/B, but dead on L/R and don't look worse than some of the better PSA 8's from the same set and would blow away most of the other crappier lower end PSA 8's.

  • PSA 8 for sure

I think the 9 (OC) might have a grade weight of 7 or even 6.

  • PSA 8 as the PSA 9 (OC) is really a PSA 6

Not automatically. Only as far as registry points. It would depend on how much off center- if the centering is at the tolerance of a straight 5 it could go down 4 grades.

Given the pops on this scenario I'd rather take the straight 8. But if there were no 10's, no 9's and and a different issue (like '54 Wilsons, that have almost no border) it would depend on the card.

My understanding, and I could be wrong, is if the card can be taken down one grade in order to ditch the qualifier they will do that automatically, but if it's 2 grades or more and no qualifiers hasn't been requested they will give it the OC.

I've become a centering freak over the past 6 yrs.

So, I'm with those who wouldn't want the 9OC.

But, just wanted to add - not all 8s NQ are created equal.

Just look at this 8NQ - I wouldn't hit it!
