Was Muhammad Ali the first trash talker ?

Was there anyone before him that would talk down an opponent the way Ali did ?
I'm sure some guys did it on the field of play, but did anyone do it in the press the way he did ?

I don't think there has been anyone like him as far as trash talking people in the press. I remember
Joe Frazier disliking Ali very much for calling him an uncle Tom.

    I believe Jack Johnson did that 50 years before Ali did.

  • I believe that's a British card, hence "American" to note the nationality.

    And saying "colored" wasn't derogatory back then. You might want to check out what NAACP stands for.

    Ali once stated that the former pro wrestler,
    Gorgeous George, was a big inspiration, for his flamboyancy and trash talking.

    If Ali wasn't the first, he did at least make it fashionable. My grandpa however, VERY strongly disagrees that Ali was "the greatest". That honor, in his opinion, belongs to Joe Louis.
