Thoughts on this '60 Yaz/ particularly the back-Grades & SCANS UPDATE

What do you guys think this '60 Yaz will grade? There is a slight bid of fading on the back. You can barely read his name on the back. His name should be in the "natural" tone of the card stock(grey) anyway. This is going in on my freebie sub. Wish me luck. I'd love for it to be a 7. Didn't get the 7 I'd hoped for. They were generous on a couple of these and rather strict on a couple, so I guess it all evens out... or does it??

I don't think they'll discount too much for the blurry name - I've sent in cards with obvious problems on the reverse and they always seem to get 9s.
That card has a lot of print marks, though. I'd say 6, maybe 7 on a good day.

Could be a 6, 6.5, or 7. Nice looking Yaz.
  • I think a lot of the Yaz cards have numerous print spots and a lot have still received 7s.

Great looking card, but I'm afraid that may have been soaked out of an album and may result in a PSA 2-4 grade as a result of whatever is going on on the reverse.

Do you have any other 60's to compare against? I think it might come back as Altered.... I hope you get a 6 or better..

  • Sportsamerica, it looks the same as other '60s cards except for the fading on the back. It's going in this week as one of my freebies so I should know the grade in a couple of weeks. If it was soaked out of an album they sure did a good job!

rest easy Neal.....i've seen cards like that from 1960 Topps with the faded backs.....they ain't pretty, but i don't think your Yaz was altered or saved from an album.....with no qualifiers, that card is a purty nice looking lock PSA 6, maybe better if the wine is flowing in the grading room that day. image

If the cardboard stock isn't warped, then the card is fine. The faded backs are not uncommon on 60's, I've seen them worse than that.

That said, the card's likely a 6 due to the T/B centering. It may be within variance for a 7, but they won't view it as such for a Yaz RC, particularly with the back the way it is.

  • I appreciate the info. guys. RonB, the cardstock isn't warped. I see it as having 1 NM-MT corner, 1 NM corner, 1 EX-MT corner, 1 NM/EX-MT corner. It probably is a 6... but good lookin' one. I never realized how many '60 cards are OC until I started doing the set.

How did you fair from PSA with the raw cards sent from your older collector friend?
  • Bump for some poppage.

The second series cards of 1960 are very common for have balck blemishes on them especially the rookie cards you would get a 6 or 6.5 due to centering. It also appears to be slightly diamond cut at the bottom.

Let's see scans of the other cards.

    "Molon Labe"

  • I would have guessed 8 PD- 50/50 side to side & 30/70 top bottom centering, 2/4 solid & 2/4 fuzzy corners, deep color, significant printers spots particularly on Carl's face. All in all you avoided the qualifier kiss of death- and a 6 is more appealing than a 8 PD because of this. Still a great card.
  • Will show scans of the other cards when they return from PSA.

The Mays looks like a 7 for sure.

    "Molon Labe"

  • I was shocked the Aaron didn't get a 5 and shocked the Mays & Berra didn't get 7s... especially the Mays with its great centering.

    Very nice star cards!

Mark - on the Mays? I think centering keeps it out of 7 territory IMO.
