I saw the commercial, but frankly thought that was an actor, not a real business owner.

I saw an article a few days ago and read it was a "real guy" with a "real shop"

Definately real, I have heard of Bizarre Guitars before and seen their ads in Guitar Magazines.

I like Guild guitars and they carried alot of them.

I've been there twice and both times Tim's "mom" was running the store and knew nothing about the cards. All I saw was overpriced wax and a couple cases with singles.

I've seen few positive reviews on websites for his shop, so I haven't made the trip 20 block trip up Milwaukee Ave. to see him.

I can't imagine that advert is going to do much for him. Why would it? The empenadas lady, maybe. And the haircut dude, possibly.

I think for a store to be successful it has to be a magnet for people selling large collections. Chicago has the collections, and people are selling. Tim did not come across as a guy buying them however (not very Mr. Mint-ish). He came across as a guy who leaves his store to be attended to by his mom. I don't know how he could make a living selling 2010 Topps baseball one pack at a time.

The karate kick was dumb. I wonder what control he got over his 3 seconds of fame?

He should have said, "I've got the cards your mom threw out...." or something like that. Maybe, "Come by and rip some packs"....not "I'm Tim" and then a judo chop.

  • Is this the same Tim that had Tim's Baseball Cards in Bellevue, Nebraska, back in the 80's? It was near the Air Force Base and it seemed that whenever I stopped in his mom was running the shop.

FWIW Good commercial or not, I did check out Tim's website today. I guess that is what you want.

The ChiTrib ran an article on him. He's posing at his high end case I assume. Say an 89 Donruss Griffey RC front and center. That's bordering on flea market level. In fairness to him, I think I also say a 58 Mantle A.S. and 53 Bowman Bauer, Berra Mantle. Nothing graded.

Unfortunately, that's the typical card store these days

Actually more typical is for a Magic tournament to be going on with a Yugi Oh tournament to follow. To pay for something they have to stop the tournament because the owner or employees are all playing and everyone thinks your a douche for trying to buy a pack of "sports" cards.

Geeez. Cut the guy a break. He was probably out working to make the money to pay his bills. You guys must all have extremely profitable stores? LOL.

Mom's may not know the biz, but she probably works for free and isn't likely to five finger discount a couple of packs of Sterling while he is away from the shop.
