Paypal Question
I was searching the net and found an item on a website that interested me but upon further investigation the listing was merely a link to an ebay listing that didn't meet it's reserve back in December.. I'm REALLY interested in buying this item and sent the seller a communication asking if it was still available. He told me it was, how much he wanted for it and that he was not going to list it again on ebay.
So, there's the item, here I am and I told him I'd like to buy them and pay with paypal. He has sent me an invoice but now I'm wondering, what if he doesn't send the items? It's not a huge amount of money ( $1,000.00 ) but enough to be concerned.
He has 155 sales with 100% on ebay although he's obviously not an regular ebay seller. I spoke with him on the phone and he sounded like a nice fellow. But I'd like to know if there's any protection should they not be sent, or if they are damaged in shipping ( has to be sent via freight as it's over 300 pounds ).
Thank you

$1000 is not a lot of money? !! it is to me.
and use a credit card to fund the payment
you have the assurances of the credit card company
ie if it is broken, or doesn;t ship, you can refuse to pay it with the cc company
as far as paypal, that may be another layer of protection??
Billy, do you know that to be a fact or is that just what you think?
This is a race. I'm on hold with paypal now over 30 minutes, have spoken to one rep who "didn't know" then put me on hold again.

its a SCAM
300 pounds freight will cost a quite a few bucks - how many miles from you?
possibly you could arrange p/u with one of your friends on a weekend
The name is LEE!
<< <i>How do fund it with another credit card although I'm not sure that's even possible considering there's always a high balance in there.

Thats a good one , the rep dont know.About sums them up.I am almost sure as long as you dont send the money as a gift which some sellers request in order to save fees you are covered.99.9% sure. They certainly trumpet on enough about paypal protection.
When clicking on send money choose a different payment method (your credit card) PayPal will give some spiel about using them and not your credit card (as I think they loose some commission) and will highlight a button called something like "Don't Change" you need to click on the button to the right in blue, which I think says "Change".
You have to go through this process every time you want to use your credit card to pay through PayPal.
"PayPal provides coverage to U.S. account holders for eligible transactions in the event of an unauthorized payment or item-not-received claims, chargebacks, and reversals.
To be eligible for PayPal Seller Protection:
The transaction must be marked eligible or partially eligible for Seller Protection on the Transaction Details page.
The item must be shipped within 7 calendar days of receiving payment to the shipping address on the Transaction Details page, and in accordance with our shipping requirements.
In the event a buyer files a claim, you need to respond to our request for documents and other information in a timely manner.
The item must be a physical, tangible good that can be shipped.Your primary residence, as listed in your PayPal account, must be in the United States."
Based on the above the purchase has to be from a website listing that is marked "eligible for Seller Protection on the Transaction Details page." Paying an invoice sent through paypal will not get you the eligibility unless the listing for the item was marked as "eligible."
Transfer your paypal balance to your bank account (0 paypal balance), and then you should be able to make the payment using the credit card associated with the your paypal account. You can do this immediately after the transfer and don't have to wait for the transfer to be completed. The only possible protection you can hope for is your credit card co.

In 1995/6 Klipsch made some great speakers with their Epic series. I had a pair which I lost when I moved overseas in 1999 and I've never, until now seen another pair like them. The speakers themselves weigh 108 pounds each, and he's making a wooden frame around them along with styrofoam padding, then putting them on a pallet and on a truck headed South. I can't wait to get them.
Thank you for the help

<< <i>It makes absolutely no differnce how you choose to fund the money via paypal. You can have the money come right out of your bank account, your credit card, or already have the funds in your paypal. As previously stated as long as you dont send the money via paypal gift you are still 100% covered under paypal buyer protection. As long as you follow the rules of paypal upon returning the coin you are going to be fine. If he does not send the item then just file the paypal claim and you are covered. There are so many myths regarding paypal its staggering, you dont need to use a credit card for any transaction if you dont choose to, as long as you follow paypal return policy, not the sellers return policy but paypals return policy you are fine. I have roughly 150,000 k going in and out of paypal every month and I never have any issues. I just returned a coin last week to a well know dealer, I contacted the dealer and he said to send the coin back for a full refund, I sent the coin with sig confirmation and it arrived last monday, the seller has not issued a refund, I called the seller twice, emailed him three times and have gotten no response. I called paypal spoke to the paypal rep and my money was refunded immediatly. Paypal is a very safe way to conduct buisness over the internet regardless of it being through ebay or not. >>
Glad it worked out, Mr. R.
Soty, you are correct in that it does not matter how the paypal payment is funded to get buyer protection. My earlier post did not claim otherwise. If you want to make a paypal payment and have it charged to your credit card you have to have a zero balance in the paypal account. Any funds in the account will prevent you from having the option to charge it to the card.
You are incorrect with "you are still 100% covered under paypal buyer protection." Your statement holds true only for ebay purchases or any other online purchase that is "marked eligible or partially eligible for Seller Protection on the Transaction Details page." No myth, this is one of the stated requirements for buyer protection right off the paypal site. In the case of the Original Poster, he would not have been covered by buyer protection by agreeing on a price with the seller then having the seller send him an invoice via paypal. Think about it. If paypal buyer protection covered these kinds of potentially shady deals then two scammers could get together as a seller and a buyer and take paypal to the cleaners.
And since the original poster was going to get no buyer protection from paypal, it became important to advise him to use the credit card for the paypal payment to at least get some kind of protection. Thus, the discussion on the requirement that to use the credit card the paypal account must first be emptied of its balance.
I would hope that someone with 150k going thru paypal evey month and providing advice to the less informed would take the time to read some of paypal's protection requirements.
