Found some old stamps, help needed.

I don't know anything about stamps but I found these in the basement of a house my parents bought over the summer. They're in an old cigar box with a sticker that says "foreign mix" I'm assuming these are not worth anything, I tried looking up on eBay..some were $1-2 each, there was even a Joe Dimaggio Ajman stamp in there image but most are nowhere to be found on the bay...anybody know anything about stamps? There are well over 1,000 here I would guess and we do not want them, any idea what the best way to sell would be? Any stamp buffs here?

I didn't see a stamp forum here...might try the coin guys, but thought I'd give you all a shot first.

Thanks,

Patrick

  • Sorry but any used stamps after 1920 are worthless. Unused are generally worth about 90% of face value.

    I agree with Blackborder.

I used to collect stamps with my dad. I also inherited his collection, which had mint sheets of stamps going back to the 1940s. Unfortunately, stamp collecting exploded in popularity in the 1940s, since President Franklin Roosevelt was a collector. Stamp collecting has pretty much died out since the late 1980s, when the USPS began printing the pre-gummed, self-stick stamps, and the later evolution of email. Getting back to my dad's collection, I had over $1,500 face-value in mint plate blocks and sheets, and only got 80% of face-value. Keep in mind, this was for mint condition, unused stamps.

You might find a price guide "value" of $1 or $2 here and there for your stamps, but the work required to get that money would make it not worth it in the long run.

If I were you, I'd search for a local stamp club. They'd probably love to get the stamps to give to any young collectors. You could also pick out any baseball related stamps, and offer them on the BST forum to any player/team collectors.

Also, there is a stamp forum here (just below the sports forums, but it's "deader than Elvis" image

Based on what I can see, there is nothing there of money value.

If you have a kid, buy an Ambassador album, some hinges, and
a magnifying glass for them. There is NO better way to learn
geography and history than to play with old foreign stamps.
