Pen for Autograph card

Can someone tell me the best pen to use for card autographs? Each year I send my wife and two sisters-in-law to the Mack Brown and Augie Garrido women's clinics. They are a social meet and greet with the coaches before the respective sports start. Well last year I sent my wife with a card and ticket from the baseball national championship game for Augie to sign. As you can see below they both had smeared ink. She said she was careful but they just would not dry. I remember hearing a long time ago about the best pen to buy. I would prefer to be able to pickup something from Hobby Lobby.

If the cards are glossy, use a Staedtler lumocolor marker. They are made to write on overhead projector sheets and typically dry very quickly and don't smear. They are usually not available in local office supply type stores, but local art stores might have some or order online.

In addition: If you have any glossy cards, put baby powder on the card and rub it all over the face of the card. Take a napkin or other cloth and remove all the excess after rubbing it into the card. The marker will now adhere much better to the card.

That's the same company, but I use their fatter tipped permanent markers.

Mike, I notice these come in multiple pen packs. Do you have an extra you can send to me? I can send you some cash via paypal.

I'm about to take off to ride a mechanical bull for charity again (round 1 was last night and I made the finals image ) , but later tonight, I'll look around and see if I can find one. I SHOULD have an extra laying around but that doesn't necessarily mean I can find it. I"ll let you know later tonight or in the AM, if I do have one, you can just have it, you don't have to pay for it.

Guys ... there are four different tips ... Mike, you said you used a broader tip ... do you use the broadest of the four?

Anybody else have an opinion? Maybe you can scan an auto and tell us which of the four tips was used.

    THANKS GUYS!

I have never sent a marker with any of the 750+ I have sent out. However, if there was a vary valuable card that you sent and thought it would look real nice with a specific color, then I would send it along. JMO.

  • I mostly use the fine tip, I have the Medium tip, but it acts more like a sharpie and will bubble more than the fine tip. The link I posted should be a link to the fine tip markers.

Medium tip Staedtler permanent Lumocolors are the best in my opinion. They even work well on Topps Chrome cards without having to baby powder the cards. They also dry almost instantly. I like fine point sharpie's too but the Staedtlers drying time is quicker.
  • The Allen & Ginter card should have been fine with a normal sharpie.

I agree - There is no gloss on a Ginter. I've sent a lot of Ginter's TTM with no smearing problems.
