1971 Sets

I was born in 1971 and I thought that it would be cool if I tried to make the sets in all four sports. I know it would take the fun out of putting them together if I just purchased the sets, but how hard are they to make the sets? I am not saying that it would be easy, but are there some cards that are just too difficult to find. I am also picky with my condition. If i was to do it I would not buy graded, I would prefer them to be raw.

  • a raw, decent 1971 topps baseball set will still cost you a pretty penny. It's a condition sensitive set, black borders. good luck!

I bought a decent 71 set for $500 Ex to Ex/Mt. Upgraded the worst 30 cards and a couple of key cards for another $250. Pretty to close to an Ex/Mt set with some PSA 6/7 HOFers and Munson for $750 total (plus still have a BVG 6.5 Ryan to sell).

I bought a gorgeous 71 Topps Hockey for about $300 - upgraded a few cards and bought a PSA 8.5 Dryden for another $150 total, sold the Dryden for mayber $40 (?) - so $400-ish for a NM/MT+ Hockey.

71 Topps Basketball should be a lotta fun......a majority of cards which are comparatively easy to obtain in nice condition, and a handful which are very difficult, so up-front costs should be minimal, but finishing may require a bit more effort.

I think it would be tough to get either 71 Baseball or 71 Football in really great condition raw. Because there is so much money to be made on those cards in high grade I would think most people wouldn't leave them that way. But that could be part of the fun of it. Will probably be a great experience and quite a challenge.

If you try to build the 1971 baseball set in strict NM-MT condition with 65-35 or better centering, it will be tough, especially ungraded. Between touched up corners, miscuts, short cut cards (Min size) and centering, many of the cards are tough to find in raw form but still high grade. There's such a high upside on high grade low pop 1971s, few people leave those raw. You may have to buy them already graded and crack them out if you're really a stickler for condition and wanting them in raw form.

    Totally agree.

You will find 71 Baseball PSA 6 cards for a song, and when you crack them out, you will be amazed at just how wonderful they look! An album full of cracked-out 6s could give you just what you're trying to accomplish.

I think picking up a set raw and building from there might be a great way to do the set Mike.

Collecting that many cards one at a time would be fun if ya have a lot of patience and time.

Heck, I've been working on a 67 card set for 6 yrs!

Good luck in your quest, you might be able to get some 7's cheap on ebay and crack em.

Also, look for lots and take out what you need/like and sell the rest. Do that a few times

and you will have a decent set and have fun doing it.

Again good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I have a few cards in EX MNT or better shoot me a PM and I can get you started.

    Good for you.

I have a lot of 6's and 6.5's and a couple 8's with qualifiers that I would sell you reasonably. Probably 25 cards so that would give you a nice little start for one shipping fee. Some of them are low pops that can be fairly steep in 8's.
