Who do you want to recognize as a good GM ?

Any sport. What good general managers are out there, or have left the game.

Lou Lamarello of the New Jersey Devils hockey club is heads and shoulders above anyone in my
years of watching sports. So who are the others ???

in the NHL cap era I give the Red Wing's GM, Ken Holland, the nod over Lamarello simply because of scouting. No one finds more talent from the late rounds than the Wings...as much as I hate to champion anything Wing related as a Hawks fan, the credit is due. In baseball I'd say Twins GM Bill Smith is near the top as well. Their system is the best at developing minor leaguers, they make smart calculated minor trades, and what little money he does receive from tight-wad owner Pohlad (though they are up to a surprising $90M this year...mainly due to the new stadium) they usually spend their money wisely...except for signing Nick Punto for $4M a year. If you look at their payroll, aside from Punto, there isn't one bad contract on that team, and that's why they're always competitive. In the NBA, I guess I would say the Spurs GM...but I really don't care about pro basketball enough to pay much attention to it. I just know outside of '97 and getting Duncan, they never have a high draft pick, and they always contend.

Edit to add: in the NFL - Colts GM Bill Polian. Finds undrafted starting WRs, will be missing it's top two defensive players, and will likely still win the SB. No one personally scouts like Polian. He routinely shows up in person at MAC conference games weekly during the college FB season.

John Schuerholz. He took the Braves from the 80's laughingstock to the team of the 90's and I don't think Atlanta ever had a top 5 payroll (maybe not even a top 10 payroll) while he was GM.
Successful transactions with: thedutymon, tsalems1, davidpuddy, probstein123, lodibrewfan, gododgersfan, dialj, jwgators, copperjj, larryp, hookem, boopotts, crimsontider, rogermnj, swartz1, Counselor

Kenny Williams of the ChiSox, first World Series since dirt was invented and continues to keep them competitive.
  • Despite some recent moves, Mark Shapiro from the Indians needs to receive recognition. He has been with the organization since 1991 and the Indians farm system has been one of the best. I mean, when you can afford to let Jim Thome go to make room for Travis Hafner (albeit not a CLE farm product), you have good problems to contend with.

Growing up, I was always amazed at the talent produced by Montreal, Atlanta, and Cleveland.

    Remember these Chuck Norris Facts

    1. When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the Earth down
    2. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, Chuck Norris can actually roundhouse kick you yesterday
    3. There are no such things as lesbians, just women who have not yet met Chuck Norris

I agree. He's got to be one of the best in baseball.

No mention of Theo Epstein yet? First two World Series for the Sox in many, many years - and the Sox have been as good as (often better) than the rival Yankees at around half the payroll pretty much for his entire tenure.

We'll add Theo as soon as he figures out the SS position. image
