Neat item. Is that really all the players got paid for being on the cards? $75 a year in 1988?? That's peanuts if that's all. Did they get a percentage of sales as well? Was it standard pricing or did stars get more?
I really like those things. I got out bid on a Leon Durham one a few years back and I am still kicking myself. And wow a whole $75 for one year of producing a card! These days Topps pay guys that much for one autograph.

I remember seeing a Ted Williams from the 50's that was over $500 for the year (I believe he took payment in appliances! )

That is a wonderful piece and would look great framed next to all the permeations of his 1988-1991 Topps card (Desert Shield, CrackerJack, OPC, micro, glossy, cloth, etc). Wow. 75 bucks per year? I wonder what they get now a days.

Steve, as a Jays fan (and Marco fan) thanks for that info! Fascinating! But, of course, it's no wonder the price of card packs went through the roof and the many card companies out there went under with contracts like that.

Mike N I think besides the 75.00 or whatever they would get they also would get a piece of the pie that the
players association would get from the companies too.
Steve

At the height of the card craze I read when Marco Scutero was called up to the Mets he got 100k from the Players association
as his cut for all items that are licensed. It said how he and his wife were rolling around in piles of cash.

It wasn't the contacts per say it was the license they had to pay to MLB and the MLBPA.
Scutero was a good (is) a good player, I think he tripled in his first MLB game.
(And won it too)
