Opened packs with my 3 year old for the first time last night

My son has been wanting to start collecting cards with me, which I think is AWESOME! So last night I took him to Target and let him pick out a box. He picked '09-'10 UD Artifacts hockey, the sport I know the least about. LOL So I also made him pick a baseball box and he chose Topps 206. Well the 206 box didn't have anything earthshattering. The hockey box had an Alexander Ovechkin GU jersey card and a Grant Lewis rookie #3/10. I don't know hockey but I do know Ovechkin is one of the best young players in the league so I'm guessing that's a pretty decent card. I've never heard of Chris Grant (or 3/4 of the players in the NHL for that matter image) but he's apparently a member of the Thrashers. Anyone know if it's a decent card?

Either way it was a fun experience. He's not quite big enough to get into the packs so I had to open them but he seemed to enjoy flipping through the cards and it gave me a great excuse to buy cards without my wife being pissed at me. image He even asked me this morning, "Can we collect again tonight, Daddy?" How can I say no to that? image

Chris .. THAT is what the hobby is all about. I just hope that one day he doesn't find your "good" cards and take them to his friends to PLAY with! LOL

Enjoy your son each and every day. Remember to give him a great big hug and kiss every time you see him.!!!!

  • hahaha! that's awesome chris.
  • Chris-
This is something that I cannot wait for! My wife says our son will be born with cards in his hands, but that would be fine by me, there would just hopefully be some autos in there!

Congrats! Let's just hope it keeps happening

I follow hockey pretty closely and I've never even heard of Chris Grant. I know there's a Grant Lewis in the Atlanta organization but never heard of that guy. These are the top 15 Thrasher prospects. May have been someone drafted late, or an undrafted FA that went back to college or juniors.

    #1 Evander Kane, LW
    #2 Spencer Machacek, RW
    #3 Carl Klingberg, LW
    #4 Riley Holzapfel, C
    #5 Eric O'Dell, C
    #6 Daultan Leveille, C
    #7 Vinny Saponari, RW
    #8 Angelo Esposito, C
    #9 Jeremy Morin, C
    #10 Arturs Kulda, D
    #11 Grant Lewis, D
    #12 John Albert, C
    #13 Paul Postma, D
    #14 Anssi Salmela, D
    #15 Andrei Zubarev, D

Couldn't even find a Chris Grant on Hockeydb.com
It's the largest database that I've ever seen for puck, and not a listing there. Did just put 2 and 2 together and realized that Jeff Penner and Tyler Eckford played at U of Alaska-Fairbanks together. Eckford is with the Lowell Devils and Penner with the Providence Bruins. Both great guys, and have multiple jerseys that both have worn.

BTW: another former Lowell Devil: #14 Anssi Salmela, D...sent to ATL for Niclas Havelid last year

cwazzy - don't say no. Just buy a whole bunch of junk wax and open them over time - avoid ones that had gum, because otherwise he will eventually try one of the pieces.

I am slowly getting my daughters into card (2 and 4 years of age) Right now they play with my old 1990 commons and put them in piles and just play with them. I am starting to show them the Yankees and help them sort out by team but they are not too interested yet. They will come around one day.

Awesome story, I can't wait, the best my guy does is chew up old Upper Deck commons. Take him to a hobby shop if possible though, WalMart and Target are last resorts in my mind.

  • I bought my 3 year old boy a box of Topps Kickoff for xmas... He loves opening them up. He asked "can I do pinch and pull daddy?" That is how I taught him to open the packs... His favorite are the puzzle pieces which are in this set..
