Hi Rack and welcome, I suggest you buy a beckett price guide so you can at least identify what you have

same thing for the comics (over street)

    Condition is very important.

Wish I could be of more help.

Someone else will chime in though.

By rental do you mean they aren't yours ?
I would tell the landlord so they can be returned to the owner.

I think he owns the rental and is the landlord. The tenant must have moved out and abandoned

these cards, at least that is how I read Racks post. I could be wrong.

I know a couple guys who clean out rentals and foreclosures for a living, and they get to keep the contents if they choose to. It can be a pretty lucrative business actually.

Sorry i can't help, but I'm sure someone will soon. In the meantime I would follow Steve's suggestions with the Price Guides and using ebay's completed auctions as a reference.
  • Well, if he's the owner/landlord, I'd hope you at least find out if one of his renter's passed and never told anyone that those were up there......strange that a renter would store them in the attic...from 1968-2002....look for anything autographed....chime in with the player name and we can give you an idea of the value.....assuming they are clean and legit...

I moved out of a rental once and left a box in the basement with some of my Redskins stuff.
The next people to move in turned it over to the landlord, who notified me ( thankfully ), and returned it to me.
I had no idea I had left it behind. Sometimes things are left unknowingly.
If they did leave on purpose great find.

Funny you mention that I have at times worked for a real estate broker and have cleaned out houses.

Yes one can find many great items that way.

In fact I once found around 200 minty fresh 71's that I stupidly sold on ebay raw.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Many here know that I am a Realtor but the bulk of my income is from flip houses. We mainly buy foreclosures and have had a few that left cards behind. Nothing exciting but still fun for a card collector to find free cards.
  • if its a rental and they moved out, its his cards now.

    Welcome Rackdude

Good luck with your stuff - maybe you can find someone on these boards who lives near ya to look over the cards?

I would attempt to try to find the owner. If after a few tries and noone claims them i would keep them. I would feel better wioth myself if i at least tried to find the owner. Karma...

I would think that unless the person that was his renter died (and had no family) or had family that had no idea he had stuff in the attic that he would know a forwarding address.

Many tenants leave that especially if they have some security coming their way.

It is possible that the tenant forgot what he had in the attic, doubtful but possible. Just as possible is that he

just left them there so he would not have to lug them to the next place, this is all conjecture on my part.

As a landlord myself, many times a tenant would leave my rental and leave all sorts of things that he/she no longer wanted.

As a tenant in my younger years I too would leave things (at the curb) that I did not want to lug to the next place.

We won't know for certain what the exact circumstance is in this specific case until/unless the OP tells us.

    All have given great advice/ideas.

    Good for you.
  • Morning,
Getting a little OT...but the stories I could tell about being a Landlord. Couple years ago had a Rental in Denver...............Tenants left owing several thousand. Decided to sell the house. Took Two..Yes Two 30 Yard dumpsters to hall the trash out of the house, over $1500 just in dump fees and then another $30,000.00 to get the house back to sellable condition. Wife and I spent a weeks vacation at the house working 14-16 hours a day.
And that's just one of many!!!!

    Neil
Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!

  • stevekstevek Posts: 30,305 ✭✭✭✭✭
Could be something there, but the better chances are it's nothing but garbage. I would say give it to an ebay consignment shop, there are a number of them out there now, let them take the pics, do the scans, and list it on ebay, they get 10 - 20% of the sale and you receive the rest. Odds are any worthwhile ebay consignment shop has listed cards before and they'll know what to do.

Then as a favor for the suggestion, post the ebay link here, so we can see the ebay auction and have the oppportunity to bid on it if we wish.

I'm thinking this is the great 80's and 90's find of junk. When he said the boxes are wrapped I was thinking junk. If and when you sell, shoot me the price by the cord. I'll stock up now for next winter.image

My first post was advice, but you are right we went way OT.

Many here worried more about how the cards should be returned to the tenant who probably

ran out owing you thousands and left your rental in a mess.

You should have stayed around and supervised this crew.

Also, you were vague about what you had so for many it may have been hard

for them to offer up any.

The thread title says 1968-2002, do you have a break down by year or even decade?

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. Like others said, 1st go buy a good guide (SCD big book is best IMO) or go to your library and check out a modern guide (post 2007)

Go through them and see if by chance you may be super lucky and find something good (unlikely) like maybe some regionals, or test issues.

Divide them up by brand/year and sell them at .99 opening bid (eBay) and maybe you can get enough to pay a couple bills. post 1968 cards.... I wouldnt expect much $$
  • Posting pictures of some boxes/cards would help too.
  • Lets clear up some things

    1. I rented the house to a bunch of college kids who had no clue on where the attic was, let
alone collecting autographed sports card.( they did collect however lots of cheap beer cans)

    2. I called the people I bought the house from 8 years ago because this forum is the "New Mother Teresa Morallity Forum of
renting houses" so I felt guilty
And they had no idea what i was talking about. Maybe it was the owner before them.

Was hoping to get a collector or card dealer in southern cal who can give me advice
Look at the collection because of the large size
The only thing I find odd is the carefull way they are stored and sorted
Certificates of authenticity for the autograhed cards
So if there is some good value here or not?
The card guide I bought says I have many good cards

    Anyway

Maybe if I go to a real estate renters forum they can help me on cards (JUST KIDDING)

My PM is unlocked for you guys to discuss further possibly

Well I tried so here's another suggestion...paste the cards together and make a surfboard out of it.

Didn't you know that you were expected to go down to the local village hall or county office

and find out all the previous owners of that property? That way you could get those cards

    back to the proper owner.

One thing does confuse me though, you bought the house 8 years ago, which puts us at 2001 or 2 and the cards

you have are from 1968 through 2002. The previous owner had no idea, they must not have owned that property

    for too long?

  • Advice:

1.you've done your work trying to find the pevious owner, to no avail. They're yours.
    2. You've purchased a price guide and have ''good cards".You're ready to sell
    3. You want to sell them: You're getting a ton of PM's from interested parties on this forum, sell it to them.
    4. If not, sell them on eBay in a large lot.

    Good luck!
